Malcolm

Born a @nais

Malcolm is the protagonist of The Last Generation. She is a native of the San Joaquin Exclusion Zone, and is driven out of it alongside her mother during a particularly active fire season.

Malcolm undergoes many changes throughout her story. From dealing with the worst aspects of Exclusion Sickness, to

As Within, so Without

Living isolated with an egalitarian commune in the wastes, Malcolm had little to no concept of gendered expectations. Interactions with other wasters, and eventually Aempians, cast certain expectations on her that she was unwilling to concede to. Instead, she became more involved and interested in the undercurrent of biohacking prescient in the Sonomans — the interest in reviving old-world gene-modding and implants.

Contributing to her desires to change her body is the strange mutations caused by her barely-understood Exclusion Sickness, which causes her skin to crack and peel, revealing scaley flesh and toxic ichor. With so much happening to her body against her will, she feels strengthened by the ability to change herself into that which she wishes.

Changes

  • Exclusion Sickness: Malcolm walks with a limp from losing several toes
  • Exclusion Sickness: Malcolm's thighs and underarms are pitted with burnlike scars from infected chafe marks
  • Exclusion Sickness: Malcolm is colorblind in one eye
  • Exclusion Sickness: Malcolm does not produce much melanin and is frequently sunburnt
  • Biohack: Malcolm takes a cocktail of estrogen and testosterone
  • Prosthetic: Malcolm has a prosthetic foot
  • Malcolm has several gunshot wounds

Wastelander

Few wastelanders could scrape a living in the disaster-prone San Joaquin valley. Even Malcolm's tribe of nomadic survivalists barely made it fifteen years before monsoon overflow flooded toxins into their wells and turned the region into a lush tinderbox for the summer blazes to ignite. They, along with everyone else in the exclusion zone, were chased north by a wildfire that took them from Sacramento to Yuba
