Sailor’s Rest
The light on the cliffs
Sailor's Rest is a small town located where a river meets the sea in northern Serukis. It is also the seat of Lord Piper and the castle of Seawatch.
History
Sailor's Rest was one of the early towns founded in Serukis, though it has never grown beyond a population of about a thousand people. It was founded by the Piper family in around 3844 EA, as they thought being in a place where the fjord met the sea would be good for fishing. It was originally a small collection of wooden huts, but grew as the years passed by. The first stone building, prioritised by the Piper family, was a lighthouse, to make sure fishing boats returned home safely and avoided the rocks and sheer cliffs along the Seruic coast. As the power structure settled in Serukis, the Piper family became nobility, and the patriarch of the family gained the title of Lord. Their house, which was stone by that time, expanded over the next hundred years into a proper castle. As the town continued to expand, the Piper family made sure that each house was built of solid stone so their citizens would be warm through the harsh winter months. Though life in Sailor's Rest was harsh, the Piper family became known for their generosity and their benevolence.Destruction
In 4464 EA, during The Second Dragon War, two fire dragons attacked the town of Sailor's Rest. Though soldiers on the castle of Seawatch eventually managed to drive them off with their two ballistae, it was too late to save most of the town. The dragon fire had been hot enough to melt through stone, and many people had been burned alive as they had tried to flee. The lighthouse was completely destroyed with Lord Sandor Piper inside. Seawatch itself did not escape damage either, as the castle's great hall was completely destroyed. In total, less than five buildings remained standing - including the local tavern.Rebuilding
Between the local tavern and the undamaged parts of the castle, the remaining townsfolk of Sailor's Rest had a roof over their heads as the town was rebuilt. The new Lord Piper, Edward, sent out calls for help for the other towns and from the Low Lords under his lordship. They rallied and sent strong young men to help rebuild people's houses. As well as houses, the lighthouse was also a priority. A new lighthouse was built just to the left of the old one, taller and more intricate than before. The castle was last to be repaired, though some still remains in ruins. The ruined great hall, with melted walls and open to the sky, is used often for the town to throw festivals in.The Lighthouse
To the Piper family, the lighthouse at Sailor's Rest is their sacred duty. At all times, a member of the Piper family must be manning the flame and keeping it lit. During the dragon attack, Lord Sandor Piper was at the lighthouse. He refused to evacuate, believing his sacred duty was more important than his life. The lighthouse was destroyed by a direct hit of dragon fire, melting the stone and turning the lighthouse into a twisted wreck. Lord Sandor's body was never found. When the new lighthouse was built, a carving of Lord Sandor was placed on the wall as a reminder and a memorial. by PIRO4D
Lord Sandor's story absolutely broke my heart. Its the inclusion of stories like this that just make your articles so powerful.
Thank you! :( He was doing a good thing but it didn't go well.
