The Aestra

The Aestra are one of the two groups of merfolk that live to the extreme south of Etrea, in the polar waters surrounding the Barren. They are the largest of the subspecies of merfolk known as polar merfolk, with some individuals growing up to forty-eight feet long. They have four major settlements, with several minor settlements in between.

The Aestra rely heavily on a stone called viridescenite, which they mine extensively from under the Barren. Viridescenite is a metamorphic stone that glows when exposed to salt water and also amplifies the effects of magic. Many Aestra buildings are constructed of the stone, and they also trade some with the migratory Kanai for supplies that are hard to get in the south.
