The Gates of Daren

Locked and impassable

This article is a stub. Please comment if you would like it to become a priority for expansion.
The island of Daren is encircled by a large impassable Wall, trapping the entire population inside. Set into the Wall are four Gates, one in each of the cardinal directions: north, east, south, and west. Whilst the rest of the Wall is plain and undecorated, each of the Gates is surrounded by decorative carvings and script in a language that no one unstands. Each gate is around fifteen metres tall and made from a combination of metal and stone. Despite the decorations surrounding them, the gates themselves have a stark design.   Many attempts have been made to unlock the Gates in the last five and a half thousand years since the Renewal, but none have succeeded. It is not yet known whether they are locked by mechanical or magical means, or a combination of both.

I found the idea of the walled island with impossible-to-open gates to be fascinating, so I had to immediately read your stubs about Daren, The Darenites, and The Wall. I can't help but wonder why the people are isolated/protected and what life is like for them. It's interesting to ponder what they might think of the outside world. I can't wait to read more and learn if there has been any communication with these people. It's great to see they conserve their limited forests. It makes sense that they would try to keep their population in check while working to prevent inbreeding. What a mysterious place to read and daydream about. :D

Can you see through the gates (like if they were made of iron bars) or are they solid, too?

I've always pictured them solid, I think. I'll have to add that in the full article! Thank you!
