The Skarrens

In the north of the Vaifale lordship, beyond the Bay of Nereus, there is a region known as the Skarrens. Inhabited mostly by an ethnic group known as the Usgar, it is a hilly place mostly covered by thick coniferous forest. The majority of the trees there are the distinctive black ironwoods unique to the area.
Historically, it was an independent country known as Sgaren, but through a series of peace talks and treaties it joined with Serukis around three centuries ago for protection against the aggression of the Erish Empire. Most of Sgaren had been under the control or influence of the empire at some point or another, and they were not eager to be subjugated again. The Vaifale family, as per agreement, has allowed the region to mainly govern itself, provided there is adherence to important Seruic laws and certain taxes are paid.
Linguistic shift has contributed to the name change, though this process was sped up due the inability of the Seruic majority to pronounce the original name.
