Lorgan's Notes: Rockstorm Cliffs

Dear reader, the Snake's Den has terrible rock storms, where large chunks of rock and earth are picked up by heavy winds and carried away.   As one might expect, being out in a rock storm is not ideal. Mere mortal trappings are no protection against the violent wind, tents are useless, and even if you have a wagon that can withstand a pummeling, your poor ronyx and spits can't! But if you listen to me, Lorgan the Wise, I will explain how to avoid a rock barreling through your ghostly essence.   At the first sign of glass floats attaching themselves to cliffs, make your way to the nearest one. What are glass floats, you ask? They look like colorful sea jellies, only they live in desert caves. They come out to feed during rock storms, sucking up food particles blown to them. To accomplish this, they attach themselves to overhangs and freeze in place, while tentacles fly free and snag munchies.   These cliff overhangs are your best shelter for riding out the rock storm. The way the glass floats stick out from the overhangs will give you an idea of which way the winds will blow. You can cozy up to the lee side of the cliff, beneath an overhang, and wait the storm out.   The cliffs in the Snake's Den are tall, the overhangs large. The centers have hollows, and an entire caravan or three can fit into some of them. Unless the wind is blowing directly at you, these hollows will provide shelter during the storm. Picket your beasts--you won't be chasing anything as the winds rage--secure your wagon or tent, and wait.   Some extended cliffs have several overhangs and hollows, and you can select an appropriately sized one for your needs. They will not completely keep all the wind and debris out, so it's best not to have a fire--putting out a lit tent or wagon isn't ideal--but you will survive the storm. That's what counts.   Once the glass floats shed their outer casing and detach from the overhang, you know the storm is over and can carry on your way. And make certain to pick up some of the casing shards before you go. Locals will pay good money for those!

The better protective overhangs are simpler to find than you may think. Generations of nomads have worn trails to them, and firepits galore litter the sites. Glass floats can provide a beacon, and then follow the same paths others have tread.   Even better, if you have a knowledgeable local guide, they know all the places to hide.
Finding an appropriate cliff may seem like a lot of work, but don't think you can weather a rock storm. You can't. Many intrepid Finders have discovered this too late, and their Chosen reappear in the Fields after they've succumbed to the Final Death.   The winds are fierce. They will dismantle your Ether form quickly. The larger debris will batter your Physical form, and the energy loss of remaining in that state will drain you to the point you'll revert to Ether form and the winds will tear you apart. So find shelter. You won't regret it.

I like the way you formatted this. It gives a good picture of what to look for and why. I'm curious about Ether from and why holding the physical form is hard. Maybe you could put in some links or related articles to help explore the world easier.

Thanks :) Yeah, I do need links; thanks for the reminder! I just ran out of time; "at whatever" doesn't work for me (it displays the first four letters only and doesn't link to the article, which is annoying because it looks just fine in the editor), so I need to look up said article and copy/paste the link. I didn't get back to it, so I'll have some sprucing up to do after the judging.

If the link looks good in the editor, press the space bar again and the correct link has been saved and should also work in the browser view. At least it always works for me.

I usually insert them while I'm writing, so there's a space after the link because I continue with the sentence. Maybe I need two spaces? Hmm. Will need to try.

Whether as a ghost or still in a mortal shell, I would very much hate to get caught in such a storm. I like how you point out the dangers of the rock storm and how best to protect yourself from it. I hope we get to know this new species better, which serves as a special indication for the traveler that such a storm is approaching and when the danger is over. Very inspiring idea.

Yeah, rock storms are nasty. I do have an article on glass floats:   https://www.worldanvil.com/w/evenacht-kwyn-marie/a/lorgan-s-notes3A-glass-floats-species   So I went in to revamp the floats article to the newer look, and I realized that the end bracket key wasn't working on my desktop keyboard. I was having a lot of trouble with CSS code during SC, and I didn't think much of it because I was using both my desktop and laptop. I think this end bracket key not working might be why, and it might be why the article links weren't working right, due to screwed up CSS. So yay, because you mentioned the species, I think I figured out my problem (I hope).
