Dark Vengeance Part 3 - Only Vengeance
Glenjer liked this part of the day the best. Back in camp, finally, he could now get out of this armor and get some ale and hot food in him. He dismounted and one of his swordsmen took his reins and another began to remove a pauldron.
“Not just yet,” came a voice from the edge of the firelight.
Every head turned at once to see an armored figure poised in the shadows, gold-orange glints outlining a suit of dark plate, the likes of which Glenjer had never seen. After the shortest of pauses, swords began to leave their sheaths. Glenjer’s flail was in its holder on his horse, but only a pace away.
“State your business, friend,” Nav said, rising to his feet from near the fire and hefting his short pike. Nav and Glenjer had gone rogue since the debacle with the caravan. The other man had spent many years crewing a pirate galley out of Orvlaan but had turned to landward freeblading to put some distance between himself and the League Navy.
“We are not friends,” the stranger said flatly. He swept a wicked looking greatsword across their hired help and then addressed them. “My business is with the knight and the pirate. None of the rest of you need to be involved.”
“One last chance to tell us what you want,” Glenjer said. He took one step to his horse and slid his flail from its holder. He let the spiked ball drop to the end of its chain, noisily and ominously.
“Sir Glenjer, Knight of the Narkal Estate and Master Nav, formerly of the Sea Witch, you are to pay for the deaths involved in the destruction of Bol Notch’s caravan.”
A number of whispers passed among the other men. Nav looked to Glenjer with a scowl.
“Enough,” Glenjer barked. “Kill him.”
Nav, as was his style, darted into the darkness. Glenjer advanced on the stranger directly. His swordsmen spread out and began to encircle the intruder.
The stranger slowly raised his greatsword to the high guard position, but before it reached the apex, he lashed out with a speed that should not have been possible, taking two of the hirelings in one sweep of the sword. As the two bodies fell to the ground and everyone stood frozen in shock at his assault, he spoke.
“My issue is only with him, not you,” he said, pointing the terrible sword at Glenjer’s heart. With that, everyone but Glenjer began backing into the darkness.
Well, fair enough, Glenjer thought. These other men were not knights. It was his job to face this man directly. And in any case, he had Nav, and they had gotten out of worse scrapes than this. At least he hoped they were worse.
He charged.
The stranger blocked his flail attack with a solid parry, and just as he should, Nav appeared from the shadows behind the black-armored knight and drove his boarding pike straight into their opponent’s back. There was a sudden crackling and flashes of dark blue light and the pike jolted upright in Nav’s hands, having never touched its target.
The stranger blocked Glenjer’s simultaneous attack as easily as he had the first, but then, again impossibly fast, wheeled to take Nav across the chest. The strike laid open the freebooter from hip to shoulder and he slumped to the ground as the knight in the exotic and likely ensorcelled armor turned slowly to face Glenjer.
His partner dead, their hirelings now vanished, he saw no real alternative.
“I am Glenjer Narkal, Estate Knight of Raalin. I surrender to you, sir, to face justice.”
“I may have misled you, Glenjer,” came the flat reply. “I am not here for justice. Only vengeance.” And the stranger’s greatsword swung for a third time.
