Krayech, the God of Death
While overseeing the transition of an ancient Krai-jan ruin into what would become Kandor City, the Great Warlock Orkash discovered the secrets of Necromancy, which had been buried deep by the ruin’s former occupants. Orkash would go on to form the cult of Jackal-Priests and tie the study and use of Necromancy to a new expression of Symker religion, the primary worship of Krayech, the god of death.
The Great Khan Telrat, on the advice of his warlock, Orkash, made service by the Undead a feature of Kandoran society. While it might seem that the common folk would shudder and shrink from the idea of the dead in their midst, most welcomed the sudden influx of warriors and laborers as a way to repulse the covetous Grular while building their great new capital city. The citizenry of Kandor has grown to accept necromancy, even to embrace this formerly taboo magic. They have a comprehensive respect and knowledge for the Dead and are willing to use them to achieve their greatness. The dead are part of everyday life in the Khanate, even entertainment. The great games of Kuxkor Krex feature necromancers dueling in an arena full of their summonings. The Returned rejoin the living for a purpose, specified at the time of their animation by the summoning Jackal-Priest. They do not have an independent existence and cannot lead armies or work crews.
There are whispers of rituals that would release the dead to a mind of their own, but the whisperers are dealt with swiftly and harshly. Kandoran freebands often fill their ranks with various types of Returned, each with their own role to play in the freeband’s missions. Undead units are terrifying to encounter on the battlefield as they know no fear, or fatigue, or mercy. Many of the Khanate’s enemies see their last ray of light through the innumerable claws of a horde of Shamblers.
And then join them…
