Urdaggar Daughter of the Bear and Baeorl

The ferocity of Bear Tribe warriors is legendary among the Urdaggar. Those that are foolish enough to test them in combat begrudgingly learn to respect or fear them. However, like its totem animal, the bear clan rarely attacks for no reason but will viciously strike when provoked.   Bear Tribe warriors exhibit an exciting dichotomy of both peace and war. Like the bears that they worship, they prefer to be left alone to live their lives. They are not to be provoked, however, as those who do so invite swift wrath and ruin.   In peacetime, the Bear Tribe can be helpful, caring, and even selflessly cooperative as it interacts with other Tribes, especially those of the Valor affiliation. The clans of the Bear Tribe inhabit a large swathe of territory from the Marn Cliffs on the west to the Fel Nevilin in the east. They trade openly with villages along the Nevilin and in the cities of Delan and Falthar. However, they are more welcome in the smaller town of Delan. They range as far south as the coast of the Florfachal and as far north as the rugged and hilly old Forests of the Paksharias, where lies the ancient territories of the Boar and Owl Tribes.   When war breaks out, however, the Bear Tribe takes its cue from Imath Baeorl, the Mother Bear. They attack and attack until the threat is neutralized, their warriors striking without regard for themselves until the safety of the tribe is ensured.   The Bear Tribe is matriarchal, falling in line with their worship of Imath Baeorl. They believe female warriors have a special connection to Mother Bear, second only to the mystics.   During a young warrior's Shukal, certain women warriors of the tribe feel a pull on their spirits. They have visions of Imath Baeorl welcoming them as one of her broods. They also dream of a sacred place that draws and calls to them. This pull is referred to as the “mothering instinct” by the tribal elders. It is reported to the clan’s Lirta immediately. During the Shukal, these warriors are referred to as Shubaeorl or Bear Cubs. They often fight with two axes for the remainder of their Shukal.   Upon returning from their Shukal, a ceremony is held where the Clan's mystic interprets the dreams of the Shubaeorl. The place in their dream is named, and the warrior is charged to go there immediately and alone. Imath Baeorl awaits them with a special gift and charge.   Far more difficult and dangerous than their Shukal, these warriors press into the barren lands alone in search of Imath Baeorl. When they come to the place they were bidden, there is always a test of strength and cunning that they must pass. The test for each warrior is different but stretches their limits as warriors and proves them as true children of Imath Baeorl.   Some do not pass the test and never return to their clan.   The result is always the same for those who pass the test. The warrior finds or is gifted a female bear cub. The two are bonded metaphysically, either by an accompanying vision or by a large female bear that speaks to the two and charges them to act in the name of Imath Baeorl.   From that moment on, the two are recognized by the clan and tribe as siblings. Upon return to her family, the woman will be given the moniker Abuhn Baeorl or Daughter of the Bear. She will keep more company with the clan’s mystic from this point out, as she is connected to Imath Baeorl naturally and uniquely.   According to the mystics, the Daughters of the Bear are a tangible link between Imath Baeorl and the Tribe. Imath Baeorl gives up one of her daughters, and the tribe relinquishes one of its daughters to form a special bond. The two are part of the clan but also uniquely belong to Imath Baeorl to carry out her will in the tribe and fight her enemies on the field of battle.   Although they live with the tribe, they can be called to service by Imath Baeorl at any time, a call that both Daughter and Baeorl will feel when it is made. When such a call comes, the tribe sends them off with a solemn ceremony, for it is the highest honor to be called to service by Imath Baeorl, and many teams do not return.   In battle, the two fight together, protecting each other and overwhelming their enemies with axes and claws. Daughters of the Bear carry two axes, a standard weapons combination used by the Bear Tribe as it mimics the two mighty paws of their totem animal. The pair are particularly adept at overwhelming a shield wall, as the Daughters hook the shields with one ax rendering it ineffective against their second blow. The Baeorl simply crashes through them or swipes with both paws to restrain their enemy in what the Bear Tribes call a Baeorl Chek - the Bear Hug.   When clans meet for a Tribal Council or Tribes send envoys for whatever reason, the Mystics’ guard is always made up of Daughters of the Bear and their Baeorl sisters. Wherever the mystic goes, so go the Daughters. Very few things are as intimidating as a Bear Tribe emissary walking into your camp accompanied by ferocious bears and even more ferocious warriors. For the Bear Tribe, intimidation is part of the parley.   Daughters of the Bear raise their cubs with all the love and ferocious defense that a mother bear does. The bears of the northern plains live to be over 30 years old, so the bond is lifelong for the Baeorl and only made once for the Daughter of the Bear.   Daughters who lose their Baeorl companion in battle become Bra’agak Imath or Grieving Mother. They choose the path of the berserker and seek a glorious end to join their Baeorl sibling.   Baeorl who lose their companions in battle will continue to fight until the enemy is slain or they are killed. If the Baeorl survives the struggle, it will jealously guard the body of their companion and then lovingly carry them off to a place no one knows. Any who tries to follow is attacked by the bear. Only a Bear Mystic may approach the pair, and only then to help the place the Daughter’s body on the Baeorl, who then carries it off.   If the battle does not take them, Imath Baeorl calls the pair forth at a time near the end of the Baeorl’s life. The team leaves their clan and travels to a sacred place in the Paksharias only known to the Bear Mystics and Imath Baeorl, from which the pair do not return.
