Varazyr

Since its discovery, or rather rediscovery, by the Great Warlock Orkash, Necromancy has permeated every aspect of Kandoran society. While the Jackal Priests of the death god Krayech are perhaps the best known, many more Casters practice the dark art for purposes other than worship. Among the many cults and castes of Kandor’s Casters are the Varazyr.   Varazyr (sym: “Slayer of Foes.”) are Necromancers trained to accompany Kandoran armies into battle and to do the most harm possible. Their school, the Pulaalkramar, is housed on the grounds of an ancient Krai-jan temple near the center of Kandor City. Varazyr Novices are selected based on their brutality and cruelty as well as their magical aptitude. Those that rise highest through the ranks are renown for their disdain for life and their capacity for malice. They focus on those expressions of Necromancy that bring the living to the realm of the dead and less on the dead themselves. Despite the dearth of skill in summoning the formerly living, a Varazyr’s unique capabilities make them superb offensive weapons and Varazyr are highly sought after when a Free Company marches to war.   To allow you to include these dangerous Casters in your Freeblades game, we have prepared a stat card for a Varazyr Initiate, representing one early in their career yet plenty dangerous all the same. Freebladers will notice that the model shown on the stat card is the Sorcerer. In the lore of Faelon, “sorcerer” is a term for any Caster who has mastered forms of magic from both the Energy and Spirit types. The Sorcerer model is intended for use in the Sorcerer scenario, but the race and clothing and gear of the model is that of a Kandoran Varazyr. Sorcery is an abomination among most of the societies of Faelon, directly counter to the will of the Gaal and only possible through a pact with some infernal entity or through rituals containing unspeakable acts and sacrifices. The frequency with which necromancers consort with the dead makes them more vulnerable than most Casters to the temptation that is sorcery.   You will also notice that the Varazyr stat card contains Necromancy spells not otherwise available in the game systems to date. Each form of magic contains fifty-four spells in nine levels. This Caster, like the Jackal Priest, is drawing from the twenty-seven spells of the first three levels of Necromancy, he just has a different set of nine. This is the same with the Fist of Vidunar and the Shadow Hunter, for example, who both draw from the first three levels of Varanic Rites. The Varazyr, therefore, represents a glimpse into the future…
A Varazyr can replace the Caster in a Kandoran freeband. Enjoy!
