The Viper Veteran
Although it might seem a great monolithic state to its northern neighbors, the Traazorite Empire is truly an empire, consisting of many subordinate provinces and subject kingdoms. One of these is Izchak, a wild jungle province whose people refuse to remain peaceful.
In fact, Izchak is so unruly that an entire legion has been permanently assigned to its continued pacification. The Viper Legion takes its name from a deadly reptile native to Izchak’s jungles. Its legionnaires are well versed in jungle combat and counter-guerilla operations.
Two centuries ago, during the Ikrixi Rebellion, the legion’s Praetor requested triple the number of bladebrothers normally detached to him. He trained these men in jungle movement techniques and had them train others until he had a full cohort of highly motivated and well-led troops able to nearly match the Izchaki in speed and agility through the canopy. These squads acted against the most dangerous and hard to reach cadres of rebels and destroyed them one by one. On particularly inventive bladebrother named Kellas Makrun trained himself and his men in the use of the native blowgun. This put his team on a far more even footing with the native warriors with whom they contended. The jungle is decidedly less suited to the use of the gadoru, the legion’s primary missile weapon. The blowgun provides a lightweight option whose venom-covered darts are highly effective against the lightly armored Izchaki braves and chasers.
From Makrun’s day forward, the legion has maintained a full cohort armed with and trained in the blowgun. Bladebrothers detached to the legion are assigned to this cohort and serve as raid leaders, taking on the most dangerous missions into the Izchaki interior. Their skill set is unique in the empire and they are highly sought after, both inside the empire and without. These veterans of the Viper Legion provide a versatile addition to any Traazorite freeband.
