Kalitria
The Kingdom of Tanish has 4 provinces, but only 3 of them are 'home' provinces. The 4th is the large province of Kalitria, which was only added to the kingdom in 496. It does not have the same rights as the other provinces and is governed by a Tanishite outsider rather than a local lord.
The Kalian people have traditionally not had any geopolitical territories. They lived in the area between the desert and the mountains in independent kin groups, which only became loosely united after the Second Reckoning. "Kalitria" was the name they gave the land, not a political entity. The northern edge of the Kalian understanding of "Kalitria", north of the Adi River, was added to the kingdom before the Reckoning, and is not part of the modern state.
Tanish launched an invasion on the first day of spring in 196. The Kalians were taken by surprise, and by the time reinforcements from the rest of the Kalian Confederacy could be rallied, Tanish had already penetrated 50 miles south of the river. Once the Kalian militias met Tanish in force, the war slowed down as resistance was put up. Kalians eventually retreated to Willa River.
South of the Willa River, the terrain becomes much more forested. Tanish soldiers, who trained in the desert, were ill-equipped to handle guerrilla warfare among the trees. They could not press further into Kalitria, but neither could the Kalians drive them out of the territory they'd already taken . In mid-autumn, they negotiated truce. All of Kalitria between the Willa and Adi rivers became a province of Tanish, and the people there its subjects.
The people of Kalitria owe the capital an annual tribute. The primary tribute is lumber, which is plentiful in the wooded areas compared to the desert. The other major export is slaves. Every year, each province is expected to provide a certain number of slaves to the capital, which can then be sold or distributed throughout the kingdom. Local governments attempt to fulfill this quota with criminals, but if there are not enough criminals, lots are drawn.
Tanish rule of Kalitria is strict. The Kalian language is forbidden, though it is still spoken in secret within homes. Tanish styles of dress are enforced, and the Kalian religion of A'uiism is outlawed on pain of death.
