The Society Organization in Flightless | World Anvil

The Society

Across the Kingdom of Tanish, there are drinking establishments where if you know the right person and give them the right words, you might find yourself invited to an illicit meeting. In bars after closing time, in family homes with the lights off, whispers in narrow alleys and under the blazing sun in the remote desert, they discuss.   They are known only as the Society; a proper name and defined identity make it easier for rumours of their existence to spread. Members of the Society seek a radical reform to the Tanishian government: mainly, they want to do away with the Oracle system and be ruled by a living person. Their perspective is that speaking from the beyond the grave has been nonsense since day one, and the Oracle is nothing more than a puppet used by the Executors of the Will to rule the country.   Their aim is to disband The Sun Maidens, eliminate the Executors, and install Seluku of the Manitushu family (one of the losing factions of the civil war) as a living king in his own right. Due to the large number of Kalian members, rights for Kalitria and an end to tributary slavery is also an important goal.   The Tanishian government is aware that an anti-government faction exists, but they do not know Seluku's role in it, their precise aims, or the leaders.

Structure

It is very loosely organized. Seluka, Rihat, and Kuya are the leaders, but not even every member knows that. Members know only what they need to in case they are caught. There are various regional leaders who report more regularly to the top three.

History

The Society has been around for roughly 20 years. It was started by a man called Rihat, whose younger sister was a Maiden sacrificed to Rekeh, and Kuya, a former Kalian Sun Maiden intent on bringing down the system that stole her from her family. Originally, the plan was focused on disbanding the Sun Maidens and rescuing girls from the order.   About ten years ago, Kuya was captured by Seluku's men. She assumed she was to be interrogated and executed, but instead Seluku proposed a partnership and proposed the idea of a living king to rid Tanish of the Executor's corruption. Since then, Seluku has been the primary financial backer.
