The Crescent Isles and Valadhon

Descendants of the "lesser" races once ruled by The Kingdom of Mithlothlond, the great houses (human), clans (goblinoids) and tribes (lizardfolk) of Imrand had built a begrudging respect of, and enduring coexistence with, each other over the centuries that followed the fall of that empire. While feuds and arguments were common, disagreements between the factions were swiftly settled by the ruling kings, warlords and chieftains of the respective races. This state of affairs, however, was shattered by the arrival of the Empire.   For the first time in centuries the Principalities of Imrand were split. Many felt that accepting the Empire's offer of technology and shared defence, especially at the cost of joining the Empire, was a sign of weakness. Others, however, saw it as a chance to advance and finally settle various problems that had previously caused so many feuds and arguments (food shortages, lack of work, etc.). Ironically, it caused a feud so large that Imrand was driven apart. Those that went against the will of the Empire fought, and were driven off their lands to the coastal islands of Valadhon and the Crescent Isles. Those that remained then found themselves weakened, as their standing within the Empire was now diminished, and no amount of technology could make up for the loss of their brethren.   In truth, the current situation was manufactured by the Empire when their initial offer was not unanimously accepted. Fearing a united Imrand, attacking from the south, coupled with the restless nation of Arninyast to the north, a secret plan was devised. Using recently discovered technology imbued with powerful charm and domination magics, an elite group of spies (code named the Shadows of Imrand) infiltrated the courts, councils and circles of Imrand's most influential leaders and bent their minds to their will. What followed was a perfectly orchestrated spilt, and then a situation where those who remained in Imrand required the aid and strength of the Empire to protect them from attacks from their former brethren. And as for those now based on Valadhon or the Crescent Isles, whenever someone acquires too much power, they are conveniently dealt with by an upstart follower or an unfortunate attack on a heavily defended target.
