The Profane Legion

The Profane Legion are a well-known free company based out of the city of Shard. Though technically independent, the Legion has served as the protective force of Shard for close to a hundred years. As well as being known as fearsome warriors, they also count numerous powerful magic users amongst their ranks.   The Legion takes in recruits from all ages and races but favours orcs and elves, the former for their indomitable will and refusal to die, and the latter for their keen eyes and inherent magical affinity. After two weeks of basic training, all new recruits are forced into deadly combat training. Warrior recruits must face battle-hardened veterans with live steel, and are often cut down quickly. As they lie bleeding, recruits with magical ability must attempt to save them with healing magic or protect them with spells while being assailed with iron-tipped arrows. Recruits regularly die during training, but the powerful casters within the ranks of the Profane Legion simply return them to life and send them straight back into the fray - that is unless it is decided that they will never have what it takes. These recruits are allowed to die, which is referred to as “bleeding out”. No recruit has even gotten through their training without dying.   The Legion sees this training as the perfect preparation for the reality of war. Others, particularly followers of the Hanged Man, see this disdain for the passage between life and death as sacrilege and consider it to be profane - hence the company name. Whether this training is cruel or sacrilegious or not, it is impossible to argue with results: the Profane Legion are one of the most feared armies across Gereth.
