Mygra's Bestiary of Atharia in The Hefflings | World Anvil

Mygra's Bestiary of Atharia

Keya Mygra of Öllrest is a Dovarian explorer who has travelled much of Atharia. Along her travels, she has kept a journal in which she keeps notes of all the places she had visited. She then compiles her notes into books. The Wonderful Bestiary of Atharia is one of these books, as she describes the most wonderful creatures in Atharia, both real and mythical; and both wonderous and monstrous.   The following are some of the creatures found in her book.

The Wonderful

Our Mother blessed us with a beautiful and wonderous world; and we are not alone. We share this world with the most gracious and fantastic creatures. Exploring Atharia and spotting many of these creatures is a privilege, but what also fascinates me are the stories people tell of those I am yet to see.

The Dovarian Eagle-Owl

This bird of prey is one of the largest in the world with its 6ft wingspan and 30in. The Eagle-Owl is the national symbol of perception, intuition and awareness (all traits of wisdom) for the Dovarian Kingdom. Their distinctive feature is their pointy ear-tufts and piercing eyes. They are usually found in the mountainous area of Astral Reach and the various surrounding regions.

Phoenlings

It is said these tiny birds are descendants of an ancient bird, the Phoenix. They are sparrow-like and no bigger than a robin. Their feathers glisten fiery waves in the sun, much like their ancestors.   Unfortunately, given their height, they are often the prey of larger creatures such as the Dovarian Eagle-Owl.   The Phoenlings are fairly common, if you know where to look, as they tend to hide in hive-like nests. You are likely to see them in Autumn when their feathers can blend in with the falling leaves.

Kalruuthian Cats

These mountain cats of the Kalruuth Mountains are best known for their love of high places and ability to dig. Kalruuthian Cats (or Kal-Cats) are creatures of exploration and curiosity. It is rare for these cats to have an owner, though they are known for choosing a companion.

Kalruuthian Cave Pigs

These cute and fuzzy little cavy hogs are bountiful in the Mountainhome of Kalruuth. These Cave Pigs are the staple of Kalruuthians, as it is from these creatures they are able to produce the delicious Kalruuthian Bacon.

Solnerii Camel

Pack animals used to traverse the hot desert of the Sandy Sea.

The Fenayan Dragon

Fearsome creatures that roam the Fenayan Jungle, the Fenayan Dragon is the largest reptile in Atharia. These great beasts are large enough for mounting, as many of these dragons are domesticated by the bravest of Fenayans; the Fenayan Dragon Riders.

The Horrific

Many may think these beasts are a curse by our Mother, even though she would never do such a thing. The horrific creatures of Atharia are the challenges we must face if we wish to traverse and experience the world we are blessed with. I have only heard tales of many of these creatures, though few I have seen.

Banshees

Banshees are restless Spirits that are bound to an item or location by an unmet, undying need. This need could be restoration, retribution or a return of a precious item. Once this need has been met, then the spirit can rest.   Anyone who finds themselves within a Banshee's domain must find themselves out or they may become a Banshee's Wisp.

Barghests & Shadow Hounds

This is the pairing of a cursed man and his dog, bound by Entropic energy with the common goal to protect something, somewhere or someone. These dark guardians, like Banshees, have an undying duty to their mission. Beware as a Barghest and his hound can be hidden in plain sight, or so they say.

Dire Wolves

Giant Wolves roam many regions of Brostia. It is rare to see a pack of Dire Wolves, however, one can be found as an Alpha of "ordinary" wolves.   There are other Dire creatures. A Dire creature is larger than the original and often bears deep-coloured eyes.

Hags

Troll witches of curses and entropy. They are often hidden away in solitude, as they experiment on their potions and various spells. Lone wanderers must be wary of any traps lain by Hags, or they may find themselves becoming a test subjects.

Solnerii Sand Worm

This monstrous beast lurks beneath the sands of the Sandy Sea. Its origin is unknown, but the devastation it can leave is a tale told worldwide. It has claimed Smallhorn as its first victim as the sandworm demolished homes and devoured many souls. Smallhorn's Doom will forever be remembered. The Sand Worm still roams the desert.

Wisps

These small spirits are best described as one's lost soul. It is said, that a soul can escape one's being. Most Wisps have no need or anything that drives them, though there is some speculation they are trying to find their long-lost person, body, or heart.   Like many spirit creatures, Wisps have a peculiar ability to go through objects. When a Wisp enters a person, that person can then experience the memories, emotions, and often personality of the Wisp. Banshees harvest the Wisps to use this power so they can possess others to meet their dying need.
