Advanced Education
There are three options for a character to get an advanced education: college, the military academy, or medical school. None of these options are open to slaves or Native Americans. The military academy is only available for men.
College
In the first half of the 19th century, almost all colleges and universities are liberal arts schools run by religious organizations. The curriculums are, in a word, limited.

Military Academy
The United States Military Academy was practically the only engineering college in the Americas until the Civil War. Even now, it is probably the best of the very few universities that teach the subject. It's also the only way to get a commission in the peacetime army. Admission to the academy is by appointment; cadets are sponsored by their congressman or senator.
