Fort Craig was originally built to support two companies, but it was expanded during the Civil War until almost four thousand men were stationed there. The original walls and buildings were stone and adobe, but extensive earthworks were constructed to encompass additional facilities.
The fort now provides security for freight and passenger stages traveling between El Paso and Santa Fe.
