Fort McDowell
Originally established by the 1st California Cavalry, Camp Verde was larger than most forts in the Arizona Territory. When the Regular Army took it over after the war, it was renamed first to Camp McDowell and later to Fort McDowell.
The fort has played a key role in Brigadier General George Cooke's Indian campaigns, particularly against the Yavapai.
