Military Telegraph

In order to facilitate the control of the native people, the US Army is constructing a telegraph network to connect their forts and the major communities in Arizona to San Diego. This telegraph currently has the following stations:

  • San Diego
  • Yuma
  • Burke's Station
  • Maricopa Well's Station
  • Phoenix
  • Wickenburg
  • Prescott
  • Fort Verde
  • Florence
  • Tucson
  • Fort Grant
  • Fort Apache

There are plans to continue construction to add stations at Fort Bowie, Las Cruces, Mesilla, and eventually El Paso.   Civil authorities have access to the telegraph for routine business. Civilians are able to send telegrams when they do not interfere with official messages. The cost is $2.00 to San Diego. From there, it is $2.50 to San Francisco and $4.50 to any station east of the Mississippi River. These prices are for the first ten words; each additional word is 10ยข.
