This speech was once known as Yowling in slang terms, it can often be heard from a great distance and over high winds or the dull roar of a crowd because of the piercing sounds that make up the common words and phrases of this language. Speakers of this language are often from the
Feline race though it is commonly spoken by a variety of peoples on the
Southern Continent to include
Humans,
Elves, and other races interested in trade. The script for Feline is perfectly suited to be made by swipes or lazy strokes of a claw and other races that are learning it often find the task easier if they learn to write with a blade as opposed to a pen.
The earliest appearance of this language is under some debate as some would tie it to the appearance of the
Feline race while others insist that the first instance of it was far earlier when the demon known as
Kaval was encountered, the first known Rakshasa. Regardless, the language appears to be composed of several interconnected sounds that receive meaning from their intensity, volume, body language, or lack thereof as well as the position of the speaker in relation to their subject. Feline has been noted to be a highly expressive language, especially as scholars have become more interested in it during the past century though many of the sounds are hard for other races to replicate such as purring, yowling, meowing, roaring, and hissing. None of these sounds on their own may be difficult but their interconnected use without hesitation, which would have an effect on the meaning of the speech, is described as awkward for many speakers that are not of
Feline descent. The script is much easier by comparison and seems to leave a large margin for error, instead of the complexity that the spoken component of the language forces, the written component has been described as free-flowing and an act of leisure once it has been fully learned. This language has a large presence throughout the
Southern Continent and is widely recognized even when not understood, due to its expressive nature and use of body language a general idea can be understood by most non-speakers through intensity and body language alone.
The advantages of speaking this language lie in the fact that it is highly expressive, fluent speakers often have very involved and lengthy conversations. While the language of
Common is widespread and often spoken by
Felines, a conversation in their own language is much more involved and often received on a more emotional level.
Felines are often said to be strange and finicky as a whole by outsiders because of their similarities to large cats but those that take the time to become fluent in their native language have either changed or outright reversed that opinion. The written component of this language is considered beautiful among many of the races that inhabit the
Southern Continent, almost to the same extent that
Elvish is on the
Northern Continent so it is useful in deciphering many ancient texts and writings in the area.
'...[O]ther races that are learning it often find the task easier if they learn to write with a blade as opposed to a pen.' This is such a cool little quirk. I like that the history of it is not agreed upon.
