Dyrr is an uncommon name in the city of
Eryndlyn, a name only held by one man. It was a name made up and taken to hide a deeper connection, one that would tarnish the reputation of a woman in the city. Once, Kalannar Dyrr was known as Kalannar
Duskryn and his mother was
Elerra, the
Matron Mother of the city.
Luck favors few in
Káto, it favors those known as the
Third Son even less. Kalannar was born the third son of
Matron Mother Elerra Duskryn, the most powerful woman in
Eryndlyn. Whispers in the family said that this child would be killed, not banished or given like so many other
Third Sons. As a toddler, Kalannar disappeared, or at least was removed from the public view.
Elerra could not get rid of her beautiful son.
Kalannar was raised like his brothers, trained in various arts including fighting and hand to hand combat. Rarely did he see the rest of his family other than his mother and the man that was tasked with raising him.
Elerra refused to let any of her daughters or other women see him, afraid that her secret would be revealed. Even so, Kalannar remained in his family’s home until he reached his twentieth year and his worth was realized.
Third Sons roaming the streets of
Eryndlyn was not uncommon. These men without purpose were beggars and thieves with no one to organize them. Once Kalannar was allowed to join the world, these lost souls would find a home in the
Black Cloak, an organization that served as
Eryndlyn's underground. Here he would be allowed to live a life free of his mother and her name, or so he thought.
Elerra did not fully release her son from her strings, but Kalannar found ways to circumvent his family. For now,
House Duskryn allows his organization to function, calling on them when the house needs something specific. As long as
House Duskryn does not see a threat in the
Black Cloak, Kalannar continues to do what he wants, making difficult dealings and women’s hearts swoon.
I really like the descriptions you have going on in this article. I also really like the associations given with his surname being a rare name in a city where (presumably) family matters, a lot. Super intrigued too by the third soons, I hope you get around to writing about them soon. If not, maybe a tooltip would be helpful for the readers. PS: There is some linking issue, see "@black"
Thanks for letting me know about the linking issue! The Third Sons article was written for WorldEmber last year and I needed to make some edits to it, but those should be done hopefully soon.
