Lucon Morcolo
Inventor of the Printing Press
He's selfish, greedy, narcissistic, but at least he gets results. Without that flawed mind of his, we'd have never gotten the printing press.
Lucon Morcolo is a famous Renish businessman and inventor from Rean Kalph in the Republic of Cherendel. He is best known as the inventor of the printing press, but those closest to him also know him as a boastful bigot and a clever gambler. Nowadays he lives a life of luxury out in the capital of the Republic of Cherendel.
Inventor and Businessman
Orange Pumpkin by Jessica Lewis
Born to a family of wealthy merchants, Lucon figured that one day he would inherit his father's business. He hadn't worked hard for anything as he knew that fortune would just come to him eventually. All those dreams and expectations shattered when on his younger brother's sixteenth birthday.
Lucon's parents announced that they would be disinheriting him in favour of the younger brother, Hugon. Furious over the sudden announcement, Lucon stormed out of the manor, completely abandoning the rest of his family. He was taken in by an old childhood friend of his, Helena Belcaph.
How he didn't see that coming from a mile away I'll never know.
First Failures
Lucon was determined to build up a completely new company from scratch. He resented his family and wanted to prove to the world that he was a better businessman than his brother. The first company he founded was a carpenter's workshop that was supposed to sell furniture. To his surprise, he soon discovered that all the other workshops were run by actual skilled professionals who knew what they were doing. He, on the other hand, was forced to hire inexperienced men who were in desperate need of money. Lucon tried learning the craft himself, but after two months, he had to abandon that business.
Printing Press
After three other attempts at starting a business, Lucon decided to take a break. By that time, he had gotten into a relationship with his friend, Helena Belcaph, who allowed Lucon to use her family's workshop. Out of ideas and desperate for money, he started tinkering around.Eventually, after years of tinkering, he realised that the prototype he had come up with had potential. It took the ambitious tinkerer another eleven months to finish his prototype. In the early summer of 1552 AA, the 36-year-old Lucon presented his creation, the printing press to the world. Soon the new business offers followed.
After the Press
And just as we all expected, our silly brother has started wasting all the money he has made. It still amazes me that he even came up with something like the printing press. He seems far too simple for something like that.
After revealing his invention to the world, Lucon was knighted by his government for the great contribution he had made to society. Gal Lucon Morcolo, as he was known after the knighting, married Klara Offenwick, the daughter of a wealthy noble from Enlitica. He still stayed in the relationship with Helena and had multiple children with both women. Klara seems to be aware of her husband's lover but hasn't done anything about it. There are dozens of different rumours that are circulating, all trying to explain the family's dramas and relations.
Decadence
Once he had purchased a manor in Cherendel and moved there with his family, Lucon started returning to his slothful and self-indulging ways. As his hard-working employees established new print workshops throughout the Republic of Cherendel and beyond, he spent the wealth gambling and commissioning statues and paintings of himself. He regularly hosts hedonistic parties for the upper classes of Renish society to enjoy, banning all others, even the small minority of Celadrisian nobles, from entering.
