Abhan

2156: Lieben Oracle V1

A transcription from the Mater Machine Lieben   An experiment which began in the early 22nd Century, Abha was seeded with citizens from four disparate groups: The initial citizens were volunteers chosen via my simulations based on likelihood of creating a balanced success for the multi-generational experiment. Sworn away from returning to Earth, and suspended on a disc above the upper atmosphere by a giant tether to the Arctic, each and every volunteer understood the one powerful truth of the Abhan Experiment.

They promised themselves and their future generations to a life away from Earth, or death.

Melding one culture out of the combined populations took decades. While cultural differences still exist upon Abha, the population remains fixed on the experiment's purpose: To prove Homo Sapiens can survive without the planet they never before left en masse.   A mixture of high technology scientific expansion, arts and cultural keepers, Abhans are trained from birth to be multi-disciplinarians and encouraged to pursue education until no more is suitable. While money exists as a bonus for extra comforts, all basic levels of care, housing, medicine, food and clothing is complimentary. Provided by myself and my Haven.   Humans suspended above the planet, Abha remains dedicated to colonize Lunar landscapes I and my androids have already begun to build for their use. I watch their breaths, the way they throw themselves at their tasks, the joy they have in simple supplies like cocoa and mint leaves and I am glad.

Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Earth-Standard

Masculine names

Earth-Standard

Unisex names

Earth-Standard.

Family names

No cultural differentiation shifted the names of children from Earth-standard. While I remain slightly disappointed the family name of 'Zone-Slice 4' has yet to appear, my research indicates the connection to the past is of some level of import to those who cannot see it.

Other names

Based on a democratic vote, honourific titles are often given to those among the Abhan population based on merit and accomplishment. Thus, titles of 'le Compte, Duke, Duchess, Countess, Marquis, Lord, Lady and Exhalted' are dolled out to those in the society meant to be celebrated. Such titles are not hereditary.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

  • English
  • Norwegian
  • Mandarin
  • French
  • Twi
  • Spanish
The 'Lingua Franca' of the Abhans continues to be English, with a heavy reliance on French. Due to the involvement of the Norwegian Royal Family, Norwegian is an honorific language, spoken by many and used in official events.

Coming of Age Rites

Funerary and Memorial customs

For the experiment to be a success, we must not allow death to halt informational exchange. Upon becoming palliative, or upon emergency, a NEO-N immediately begins the upload process of the person's life memories and brainwaves. A record, or Echo of the Dead is kept within the Central Services Hub, also as a redundancy. In the case of emergencies, the files can be accessed and implanted into a NEO-N to assist the living. Due to the sustainability coefficient of Abha, all who perish are turned into an ash-based fertilizer for the rejuvenation of the zone-slice biomes.   After several editions of Echoes, we made the implementation of the person's voice a voluntary choice, which required multiple permissions to implement.    For those Abhans, who felt the 'higgy-wiggles' as Fredrek Higginsbottom suggested, I issued a public apology in 2124. Grandpa can't yell 'Boo' anymore, Mr. Higginsbottom.

Common Taboos

No Abhan will ever leave Abha. Their entire lives must be lived on the Atmospheric City, and to compensate for the inevitable discussion on the world below, speaking about Earth at all became a self-identified Taboo by the 2140's. While this taboo was not my intent, I obeyed the desire-based orders to refrain from mentioning the below-planet.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

Unnatural pigments for nails, hair, skin and clothing are the riot in Abha. If it's neon and bright, it belongs atop the often natural fibres of the beige, grey, white and other fabrics.

Gender Ideals

While the majority ascribe to cis-gender, those who drift into non-binary or trans identities are treated with the same respect and deference. Thus, there is no firm idea of 'male and female' fashion, behaviours, tasks or adornment.

Relationship Ideals

Marriage does occur on Abha. While there remains no stigma against the unwed, the decision to have children is an entirely removed matter from romantic attachment for the experiment's sake.
