Nonogawan Mochigome

The short-grained, sweet rice from Nonogawa is known throughout Japan for making the best mochi, wagashi, and shiratamako. Prized for its exceptional flavor, tenderness, and texture, this rice sells at a premium and the best wagashi shops will only use shiratamako from this rice.   Unlike Kyuunan's rice, it's a late harvest variety. While the farmers of Nonogawa grow many kinds fruits and vegetables, the area seems particularly suited for rice cultivation.   Nonogawa visitors can buy the rice, colorful handmade mochi filled with red bean paste or strawberry jelly, and seasonal wagashi as souvenirs.

The locals know when the harvest will be, but no rice from the current year's harvest is eaten, until the Rice Harvest Festival to Inari starts.
