Aramsker

The Aramsker began their life on Arasram, marooned by space-pirate mutineers. It was meant to be a death sentence for the deposed Dread Pirate Oberths and his faithful crew due to both the size of the group and the harshness of the environment. The assumption being that a thousand pirates would turn on each other for resources almost immediately.
However, under the guidance of the Dread Pirate, a majority of the original crew survived; though not without great hardship. Food and water were scarce. Plants were difficult to grow and often dangerous in their own right. Animals were quick and usually had little meat on their bones.
In the early days, they practiced cannibalism in times of famine, which was quite often. Those who died of natural causes, or were fatally wounded, were happy to know their death would help their people survive. They reserved the death penalty for the most heinous of crimes, including murder, and they would perform the rites on those who faced capital punishment as well. Those who died of illness, or under circumstances too strange to understand, were burned upon a funeral pyre.
After multiple generations, the Aramsker population had grown beyond the caves, and they grew into the town of Oberheim. They were proficient in harvesting crops and a few domesticated desert beasts. They even had multiple ways to collect water. The most common was collecting condensation in the underground cave system. Desert crops returned much water upon harvest as well.
When a ship of pirate treasure hunters came to Arasram seeking the legendary lost hoard of Dread Pirate Oberths, it surprised them to find a colony. The Aramskers showed the newcomers a peaceful haven while they were there and offered to open trade for the exotic goods squeezed from the once barren planet. When the travelers left, they vowed to spread the word amongst the space-pirate Svarmandes.
After a few decades, Arasram became a secret haven for space pirates. The influx of technology and supplies allowed for far greater manufacture of Arasram goods. The harsh environment killed the interest of any raids by outsiders, and by all official records, the planet was still an uninhabited wasteland.
