Corrupting Entity

Corrupting Entity

Player Interactions

  • More officially introduced in Chapter 15, this entity spoke directly to Grendira as she approached a pocket of corruption in Hygrim.
  • Little is known about the entity, but its intent does not appear to be friendly.
  • The entity claims that it is responsible for bringing Grendira back to life after she "died" in the monastery. However, this apparently was at the cost of Pepperwell's safety.
  • When Grendira refused to play the entity's game, the creature decided to move on to others.
  • The party encountered this creature in the Twilight Grove, where it took credit for corrupting all the land before them.
  • In the second conversation with The Weaver, the party learned a lot of additional lore about the creature (as outlined below).

Connections to Verdant Princes

  • Information from The Weaver suggests that the entity is a Verdant Prince. However, the behavior and abilities of the creature are not similar to known Verdant Princes within the Feywild. Instead, it appears to have some sort of Eldrich connection - otherworldly and extremely dangerous.

Oath Bound

  • All Verdant Princes have the ability to create a single Oath Bond with a living creature.
  • This is a magical binding made with a prince and a mortal. If one party breaks the bond, the wronged one becomes instantly aware and the oathbreaker would be diseased/cursed/plagued. Only a wish or miracle can break an oath bond, as well as death, which would also cause the wronged party to be made aware.
  • The Weaver believes this prince made an oath with the individual responsible for killing Jonas. Whoever this is, they must have been absolutely desperate. They are getting something out of this deal – but the true beneficiary is the Prince – who is obviously gaining power in this forest.

The Lost Deal with Grendira

  • According to The Weaver, Grendira has unknowingly some sort of cruel deal was made with the creature, which was stripped from her memory right after, likely as part of the deal itself.  So, although Grendira negotiated some sort of deal, she is doomed to not remember the details.
  • Whatever the deal is, it also has something to do with her spores. The Weaver is unsure if the spores were naturally awakened, or if they were part of the deal made with the prince. Either way, they are independent of the prince’s power – in fact the spores themselves appear to be counter to the corruption.
  • Still, being under a “bargain” with the creature has left a dark mark of corruption in Grendira’s heart. The Weaver will note that Grendira is not under any threat to be taken over by the corruption. However, she must be wary, as the prince will do everything in its power to psychologically torture her.
  • The Weaver also recommended avoiding any sort of additional deals with the creature. Even if it disguises it as a simple game. Whatever deal was struck with Pepperwell’s safety seems to have it on edge – it’s the only reason why it would go to such lengths to make it “easier” for itself.

An unknown entity that is either born from the corruption or is the cause of it.
