Pepperwell's Ring

Every summer, Grendira is visted by her granddaughter, Pepperwell Pickywicket. Many years ago, Grendira gifted Pepperwell a ring of invisibility, which could be used to gaurentee a safe journey by herself. The ring itself has quite a history, having been traded from countess in Stothum. She made Pepperwell vow to never reveal she was in possession of the ring.
Yet now it is in the possession of Berri Schlepen, the daughter of a traveling family of merchants.
Known Facts
- Grendira claims that she traded with a countess in Stothum for the ring. The countess did not know the true value of the ring, claiming it was gifted to her by a gentleman caller who she shared no interest in.
- Berri claims that she befriended Pepperwell while the caravan was visiting Magaford. Pepperwell eventually confided with Berri about the ring, while also claiming that her family was being harassed by a "rather ugly man with poor taste." Berri claims that one morning she visited Pepperwell's home to find her entire family missing. Looking around, she eventually found the ring.
- Berri is considered a 'savant' in the world of magic item appraisal, despite being only 18 years of age. This is confirmed by Traveste during the auction.
Encounters
- Grendira first spots Berri while visiting the caravan, where she is introduced as having 'discovered' the main attraction for the upcoming auction. When Berri sneaks away, Grendira follows, eventually cornering her in an empty manor.
- Berri initially attempts to hide from Grendira, refusing to come out of a room. Grendira is able to have a conversation with her about Pepperwell from behind a door, where she visually confirms the ring's existance.
- Berri is aware that the ring is going up for auction, but claims that she "has a plan" to make sure it doesn't get sold.
- When the ring goes up for auction, several groups end up putting high bids. In the end, it comes down to three - a representative of the Duke, Tobias, and the Triple Fang.
- Although the representative of the Duke wins the bid, Travaste gets the party to start a revolt - as it isn't exactly fair for the Duke to win the ring. This spreads throughout the town, forcing the representative to back down.
- By default, the ring is then presented to Tobias - who is shocked to find that he won. The town celebrates this victory, going to the tavern to buy drinks.
- Grendira later confronts Berri, wondering what her plan was. Berri responds that her plan was simply "to make money", with little regard to the outcome.
