The First Crepe

Today we celebrate young Ana's birth! What a joyous day. The plate is hot, get everything ready! Once we start cooking, this will all start to go very, very quickly! Much like the years that come and pass, this time will fly by before you know it.

The First Crepe is a birthday tradition observed by farm families living in the Harvest Belt of Terramarre. Sweet delights greet these birthday celebrants, as they celebrate one more year of life.

Execution

This celebration involves a fair amount of work, primarily in the form of cooking and cooking preparations, followed of course by cleaning. The entirety of the celebration is handled by every participant from beginning to end in shared responsibility.   During this traditional celebration, a tremendous pile of crepes is made for the family to share, with one special treat for whomever's birthday is being observed. This tradition derives its name from the practice of granting the birthday-haver the very first crepe of the batch, which is placed in a special dish to soak in diluted sweetberry resin before serving.

Participants

This celebration is attended by whomever's birth is being celebrated, as well as their family. There are some cases where friends of the family or close friends of the birthday-haver are invited as well, if such close relationships exist beyond the family.   Every participant in the celebration is an active one, helping to cook, helping to serve, to clean, and to wish a blessed year to the subject of the celebration.

Observance

Though a birthday celebration, the First Crepe tradition is typically observed on the first non-working day on or after the true date of birth, to ensure a full, free day to indulge in the tradition or include more than one celebrant in the event of multiple birthdays in one working week.

May your next year be as sweet as the gift you are about to receive, my dear!

A Loving Expense

Sweetberry resin, produced by the Sweetberry Beetle, is a very expensive resource. Despite this, those who reside within The Harvest Belt refuse to forego this step of the tradition. In low-income households, however, some elders or parents may choose to forego partaking in the resin, opting to save the valuable ingredient for their children's birthdays.
