Monster of the Week by Evil Hat

Most people don’t believe in monsters, but you know the truth. They’re real, and it’s your task to bring them down.
Monster of the Week is a standalone action-horror RPG for 3-5 people. Hunt high school beasties a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer, travel the country to bring down unnatural creatures like the Supernatural Winchester brothers, or head up the government investigation like Mulder and Scully.

The Legacy

You stand as members of The Legacy, an organization bound by a singular purpose: to shield our world from the encroaching perils presented by supernatural entities, forever concealed within the shadows, poised to inflict harm upon unsuspecting humanity. This enigmatic society weaves a rich tapestry of history, ancient mysticism and forgotten technology to preserve the sanctity of our global order. Yet, the exceptional agents of The Legacy are no ordinary defenders of the night. They are the living descendants of the First City, an iconic civilization steeped in age-old wisdom and advanced technology.

In PBTA games, players roll two six-sided dice (or D6s) to determine whether they succeed or fail at tasks set for them by the game master. The GM, in turn, keeps things moving and tries to preserve a modicum of continuity. But the players also have extreme amounts of leeway to help shape the world and their relationships with other characters.

    Contrasting the mechanics of
    PbtA and Dungeons & Dragons

The differences really come down to crunch and conversation. Players looking for a sandbox or linear adventure with lots of crunchy combat will enjoy D&D in all its glorious variety. Those who want a more collaborative storytelling experience with fewer granular choices (and probably less math) should try PbtA games.
