Born near Llino in Aelargo, Halbert 'Handsome Hal' Currington served as a stableboy to a local lord. He was said to be so handsome women and men would come by stables to watch him brush and exercise his lord's horses. He later became a coachman for the noble house. But, he left that employ to become an independent coachman in Llino. The story persists it was because the lord of the house found Halbert in bed with not only the lady of the house but also two other servants. However, the lord's reaction was not what was expected. As a result, the lord's wife divorced him, uncontested, and the other servants were given large severances to leave.
Halbert used his severance from the house to buy his own coach and began working in the noble districts of Llino. He was very popular amongst the noblewomen and very sought after by their daughters. He received many handsome tips and presents becoming accustomed to living beyond his means. He was well known for wearing expensive flamboyant costumes which gained him invitations to balls and galas of the city's social circles. A result of his expensive lifestyle was that he was constantly in debt.
He began supplementing his income by pick-pocketing with some success. He began to plan and successfully rob many of the great houses he visited daily to drive the residents around the town. During this time he became familiar with the Llino Hands and Night Market merchants. His lifestyle continued to increase in funding needs, driving him to ever larger and larger thefts. Eventually, Handsome Hal began stealing estate treasures, jewelry, and other valuables especially magical items.
Handsome Hal devised a clever plan to rob some of the very wealthy by pretending to be knocked out by accomplices strategically set up in ambushes. However, some of his cohorts became greedy and tried to rob Halbert themselves. It is during this highwayman period that Handsome Hal also became a deadly assassin. Word on the street was that anyone who tried to steal from Handsome Hal would be dead in 24 hours.
Handsome Hal was arrested several times on charges of robbery, twelve of his cases were dismissed due to lack of evidence as witnesses were unable to identify Handsome Hal or were unwilling to testify against him.
During one trial, dressed in bright silks with a vest covered in flowers and he painted his irons gold making them look like jewelry, Handsome Hal addressed the judge saying "I know only what you've told me of this matter as I was unconscious from the start" when he was asked if he had anything to say in his defense.
He was finally caught in the act with no chance of skipping clear when he tried to rob the Temple of Nannan in Llino's temple row of all its gold paraphernalia. Supposedly he did it on the cough as part of a drunken bet. At his trial, he cheerfully bantered with the guards and judge and even danced a rather clever jig when he was sentenced to death. He was held in prison in the Llino guard complex, where he supposedly entertained seven women at a farewell dinner before his planned execution. In the morning his cell was found empty except for his discarded clothing.
Reports of a brightly dressed noble with a golden cane looking a lot like Handsome Hal climbing into a red wheeled bright silver embossed carriage just outside of the guard complex circulated the following day. A reward has been posted for any information to Handsome Hal's location has been posted for many years with no other reports of this colorful highwayman.
At the time of his disappearance, he was only 23 years old.
