The Lucky Lance

The Lucky Lance's Tale

Beino was traveling in Nasur when he chanced upon Inlit who was wandering aimlessly unsure of what she should do. The two hit it off and after several weeks of exploring the city of Manfech Beino invited Inlit to return to Carda with him. They traveled together and Beino eventually explained his dream of opening a tavern. The two of them decided to try their luck. Inlet was already a trained cook, but she set to learning various cuisines and herbs in Aelargo. They started in Carda with a street wagon testing various food and drink combinations. When Sir Sendel came through Carda to establish Sendel they decided to follow.   Beino's wife of twelve years didn't want to leave Carda and so they divorced. Beino still writes to her from time to time. In Sendel they helped feed the small garrison and growing locals from a modest one-story inn they built. When the Niya-Samri war happened Beino and Inlit went with Sir Sendel as camp cooks.   In one battle the camp was overrun by Niha-Samri. Beino was not a fighter, but Inlit was. She grabbed some weapons and set to defend the camp. Beino, concerned for his friend grabbed a lance to help. But, he tripped as he ran. He lost the lance which speared a Nhia-Samri who was about to finish off one of Sir Sendel's officers. The story is still retold to much laughter by the guardsmen who survived the war.   Although Inlit nor Beino saw any other action in the war, when they came back to Sendel, Sir Sendel granted them the land and enough money to build the tavern they always wanted as a reward for their excellent service and the lucky saving of his officer's life. Both Beino and Inlit are very proud of their inn and work hard to keep it in good repair. The linen and materials are starting to show their age and Inlit's regular cleaning takes its toll. But, the old city guards still come by for Inlit's cooking and to tell stories. Since the inn is tucked behind the keep it is a favorite quiet spot for the officers and their families as well as the farmhands.   The Lucky Lance is a tavern of modest quality, and its main draw is its warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Staff

Bartender/Owner

Beino: Male Human born in Carda to a stable master. Beino is tall and lean, with wavy auburn hair and large green eyes. He wears modest garments in various colors which are always color-coordinated to match the current set of paintings hanging in the common room. He favors a wide-brimmed dusky amber feathered hat when he goes out to the farms. His voice is something most bards dream of having, and his features, movements, and stances always remind people of sculptures. In short, he is incredibly handsome, charming, and totally trusted by all. He is often energetic in disposition.
Beino is a real jewel for Sendel. I'm not sure which is better, his art, his tavern, his attitude, or his looks. You'll have to decide for yourself. But, you can't go wrong staying at the Lucky Lance.

Cook/Owner

Inlit, or Cook as everyone calls her, is obviously a female yuran-dwarf chef (from the northern Sargon Mountains in Nasur.) Inlit is the stereotype yuran-dwarf with distinctive curly copper hair, bright copper eyes, and a beaked nose. She wears modest garments which are always spotless. A heavy silver neck chain is always displayed on top of her clothes with a silver knot pendant.
Inlit is my right hand and even sometimes my left. I'm proud to call her a friend. I don't care what they say she did, you can trust your life to her care, and I should know.

— Beino

Hired Help

Historical Note on old occupations
A large enough household would have separate departments for the table linen (napery), drinking vessels (ewery), alcohol (buttery), lighting (chandlery), etc., and various aspects of the food (larder, spicery, saucery, etc.). The guys who carried the food to the table from whatever department were just "bearers" (ber(e)-man and ber-knight). In Middle English, "waiter" meant "watchman". Bearwoman or beermaid will work for women.

Apprentice Cook Malpa
A young adult human male who generally stays in the kitchen doing as he's told by Cook. Malpa appears to be very strong as he is often seen carrying large bags and kettles around easily. He has brown hair and sharp brown eyes, and a flat previously broken nose. He is unwashed, his clothes appear to have been slept in for weeks, and his hair has never seen a brush or comb. He doesn't make eye contact with people and speaks very softly except when answering other staff members or some local farmer lads. He is wearing modest garments that might have been white or light blue once but are now a dingy tan. He has a long knife in an open belt sheath on his left side.

Malpa? He's a good lad. Give him time to warm to ya. You'll not find a more honest soul.

— Cook

Bearer Aiciar
Aiciar Glynne is an average-looking mature human female. She has tangled red hair, light green eyes, and a slim neat nose. Her right hand has a bright scar from a deep cut. The scar starts on the back of her lower right arm, crosses the back of her wrist, and continues to the center back of her hand. She doesn't seem to worry about the scar as she is wearing a short sleeve blouse. She clearly favors her right wrist at times carrying heavy trays with her left hand. Her clothing appears new and she has a pewter Celtic trifold knot amulet. She is clearly the mother of a dextrous little fellow that shares her general facial features, eyes, and hair who is also dressed in new if slightly smudged clothing. She calls the lad Rodric and regularly calls for him to help serve & bus the tables.

Dergi The Cat is a ginger cat who wonders the common room and upper level at will. Dergi regularly stops as people randomly pet him. He seems very amenable to this and his progress is very slow as almost everyone does reach out to pet him as he moves through the room.

Aiciar is such a bright soul. It don't matter what the weather or your troubles she'll make the sun shine for you. And if she isn't enough just try and stay sour while petting her little Dergi!

— Dene

Bearer Luaga
A young adult female halfling barmaid. Luaga is tall for a halfling at almost five feet, with thin brown hair and gray eyes. She wears modest garments and a lynx fur cape when she goes out. She is slightly flirtatious, more-so with individuals with marrying potential. Luaga is in charge of the stores and oil lamps for the inn. She is often seen walking around with an oil can, measuring stick, and a bag of wicks which she uses to meticulously check and clean every lamp.

Luaga? Don't mind her, she is just that way with most men. Between you and me she is really trying to get that cute smith's apprentice to pay attention. If you have any problem with the lamps call her. She keeps them all in perfect order.

— Aiciar

Bouncer Dene
A upper middle-aged male human bouncer. Dene has straight blonde hair and light brown eyes. He wears a heavily padded cloth shirt under a loose leather vest. He has a halberd leaning out of reach of anyone but him just inside the door. He also has a long knife or short sword that looks expensive in a blue scabbard. Dene's chiseled features and smooth movements instantly bring to mind a powerful and skilled knight astride a tall steed instead of the aging man on a barstool by the door leaning on an iron capped quarterstaff. Dene is a quick wit and friendly sort, but everyone is very polite to him.

Dene? You can trust that man with your life and coin. Such a tragic lost soul though. I pray for him every night.

— Aiciar

The Clientele

On a typical night, the clientele at The Lucky Lance can be described as incredibly friendly. It consists of many of the city guard officers in civilian clothes mixing with the local farm and ranch workers who come in from the northern and eastern farms for a pint and to listen to the bards. On any given evening there are several other people staying in the tavern. The patrons enjoy games of chess and go which are scattered throughout the common area. There will always be conversations on religious or political matters.

The Accommodations

The rooms for rent at The Lucky Lance are average-sized and industriously cleaned by the three cleaning staff members. All the sheets are washed weekly by taking them out to one of the farms where a virtual clan of daughters their mother is trying to start a cleaning service for the city. Everything is washed in various flower petal scented waters and the odors change with the seasons. There is currently one room available for rent.

Stable's Staff

Stableman Conne
Conne is a rugged-looking mature human male who is the stable master. Conne has messy blonde hair and large gray eyes and walks with a limp. He wears well-made clothing and a goose feathered felt hat. Conne takes care of the stables with the help of his two sons, a teenager called Fitheal, and his kid brother Berian. Fitheal is a little taller than his father with strawberry red-blond hair cut shoulder length in a ponytail, gray eyes, and wears simple cotton pants and shirt, with a leather Ferrier's vest. Berian is full-on ginger with freckles, light skin, and emerald green eyes. Berian is shorter than his father and brother by a full hand. Berian's hair is cropped short and he runs his hands through it all the time making it a chaotic mess that looks pretty good. Berian is dressed the same as his brother except his clothes have more patches and stitches, clearly hand-me-downs.

He may be overly proud and stubborn but takes excellent care of the animals.
