Rockleith Frog (rɒk'liːθ frɒɡ)

While this article seems fairly complete, many elements will require completion after WorldEmber, particularly the history of the creature and its RPG stats which will go in the sidebar allowing for a greater understanding for those who wish to use the Rockleith Frog within an RPG system.

The Rockleith Frog is a uniquly large amphibian that can be found far across the realm, though particularly in the jungles of Kyradon and the Tokevis Region north of Ossalimar. They're commonly domesticated as pets or their form can be taken for a familiar, parimarily by Witches.

Description

There are two common variants of the Rockleith Frog, each with a particular link to their region. However, it is not uncommon for the Rockleith Frog to be found with a drastic variation of different colours that are specifically linked to the region which they inhabit, this is believed to be a survival strategy that allows them to survive throughout the region. Regardless of the variations most Rockleith Frogs usually approach between 4.5 to 6 feet tall and often weigh around 300 to 400 pounds.   Each frog has powerful rear legs that allow them to jump high in the air and also give them a strong kick should they be picked up by an individual. Their legs are typically ended with webbed feet, however when aggrivated its not uncommon for these webbed feet to protrude small claws that allow for the Rockleith Frog to strike at those around them. Additionally, when aggrivated, the frog will turn a vibrant colour and have large spines that appear along their back in another vibrant colour which makes the frog look much bigger than it already is and attempt to ward off any aggressors.

Kyradon Rockleith Frog

Some scholars have considered the Kyradon Rockleith Frog to be a remnant of the previous era, a creature who thrived in the lush jungles that once filled the entire continent. However, during the Fall to the Void many of the creatures who remained on the western side of Kyradon were said to have been destroyed in the strange blast of magic that filled the land. At least a small contingent of Rockleith Frogs were kept in the northern cities, from this small population and the influence of those with magic, the Kyradon Rockleith Frogs have managed to flourish and become one of the primary inhabitants of the Dumal Jungles. Once the population started growing it seemed to keep growing further and faster by the years.   In their calm state the Kyradon Rockleith Frog has a dark green complexion with some red and lime green accents that mostly hide them in the dense jungle, allowing them to also appear more threatening with the red around their eyes making them seem more threatening. The easiest way to identify a Kyradon Rockleith Frog, other than their size, is the obvious veins along their lower jaw, they are often a shade of light blue, the colour of their venoms and toxins that course through their body.   When aggressive however, the creature will produce a set of frills all the way down its back that are a bright purple, they easily add an extra half a foot, if not more, to the height of the frog. Additionally, they protrude almost metallic claws from all of their fingers and toes that seem to drip with a light blue liquid.

Tokevis Rockleith Frog

Tokevis Rockleith Frog by Owen Davies
The Tokevis region is full of strange magical potential due to four large crystals that remain after The Shatter. There is no explicit confirmation on what these crystals do, however, it does mean that creatures from around the world are often attracted to the region, regardless of their traditional climate. The Rockleith Frog is one such creature. Scholars are still unclear how the creature managed to get from halfway across the world to the island of Tokevis but it seems that they possess additional survival mechanics that allows them to live in the arctic tundra.   In their calm state the Tokevis Rockleith Frog is has a black bodt with a white head. Their lower jaw is black with a large patch of yellow while there is a long stripe of black that lines their back. Their chest is purple and almost seems to shine with some form of magical energies.   When agrivated, the Tokevis Rockleith Frog's yellow patch almost seems to swell to a larger state filling out their collar. Additionally the purple on their chest and belly seems to change to a dark blue and red energy swirling link ink in a liquid. Lastly, the strip on their back seems to protrude from the Tokevis Rockleith Frog's head and back forming spines that can be used as weapons against any pray, these spines are replicated on their fingers and toes and a icy cold tip grows on each of them.

Abilities

This section focuses on the different primary abilities of the Rockleith Frog. These abilites are written to focus around tabletop roleplaying games, with a particular leaning towards fifth edition. If an ability is limited to a regional variant of the Rockleith frog, it will be noted in italics below the header of the ability.

Amphibious

The Rockleith Frog is able to breathe both air and water. This allows it to be versatile both on land and in water.

Venomous Strikes

Whenever the Rockleith Frog hits anyone with their claws, they are injected with a venom into their veins. The person attacked can attempt to shake off the venom as it enters their bloodstream, though there is still some effect regardless of if they are paralyzed as the venom intends.

Toxin Gas

When threatened, the Rockleith Frog can use an action to release a cloud of toxin filled gas to creatures around them. While they have resistance to any form of poison, they can inhale this gas with no ill effects. Other creatures though will often hallucenate vividly and will become mentally scarred by the visions they see for up to a minute.

Forceful Leap

As an action, the Rockleith Frog can use its powerful legs to make a large leap to a distance of 60 feet. If they land on a creature they must try to move out of the way to avoid being somewhat crushed by the Rockleith Frog.

Whiplash

Kyradon Rockleith Frog
When a Kyradon Rockleith Frog wishes to, they can add barbed spikes onto their tongue. When they do so they take a small amount of damage but then can pierce these barbs into an individual and stun them for a short time with a slow acting poison.

Frozen Spit

Tokevis Rockleith Frog
The Tokevis Rockleith Frog can launch a small projectile of spit that seems to have a temperature that exceeds the coldness of the arctic storms of their home. When a creature is hit by this, their limb could start to freeze, not only pinning them in place, but also causing immense pain and hurt.

Ice Magic

Tokevis Rockleith Frog
The Tokevis Rockleith Frog can cast some minor magic related to Ice, particularly related to defensive procedures and at the worst attacking other creatures. This innate connection to cold magic grants them resistance to such forms of damage via some kind of magical warding.

Lashing Tongue

All Rockleith Frogs seem to be able to whip and attack with their tongue as a normal person would use a whip. Their strikes with their tongue can depend on the size of Rockleith Frog, however it is more common than not that the tongue could kill an average person in one deft strike, though Rockleith Frogs are known to make at least two strikes if not more in a row.

Poison Dart

Kyradon Rockleith Frog
When threatened from a distance, the Kyradon Rockleith Frog can use the barbs that its tongue grows to launch posion filled darts at those who are being aggressive towards it. These darts can easily be launched 60 feet, though at a range it can be successful on the odd occassion.

Honestly, the idea of a frog THAT size is actually terrifying. The fact they also have a threat display is fantastic; I honestly love any creature that changes appearance as part of a threat or mating display. This is a great, well-written article, and I really appreciate your original artwork. Really elevate your work and add that personal touch!

Awh this article is just friggen great. I absolutely loved reading about the different abilities and the subtypes of the frogs. Your illustrations worked fantastic to draw in the eye and bring attention to the subtypes and defensive behaviors!   Those claws look dang anasty though! One question I have, is are they edible?

I didn't ever consider the claws as being edible, but it will most certainly be explored!
