Avux's Staff of Navigation

This staff is made of magically reinforced Tanukian Wood. A glowing astrolabe is placed on one end, and a ship's wheel on another.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The staff emits a constant glow which can only be seen by its current owner. When used for travel to the Elemental Planes, the wheel's glow is seen by every living creature in the vicinity; similarly, the astrolabe glows for Outer Planes travel, and the staff itself glows when traveling to the Material Planes.   The staff itself is masterfully shaped out of Tanukian wood, reinforced with as of yet irreplicable magical augmentations, supposedly of the abjuration school of magic.

Significance

Though not one of the original artifacts gifted by Tehomot to the crew of the Endaweaower, it has been in the navigators' possession in every documented encounter with the ship, with the earliest of them dating as far back as the early first century.

Uniqueness

It is believed that the staff is one of many; the main support for this belief is the absence of any mention or reference to Avux in virtually anywhere else. If Avux was in fact powerful enough to create the staff, it is highly unlikely that this was their only feat of strength worth mentioning. This implies they were merely the staff's owner, with the possessive form of the name serving to distinct it from other staves of navigation.   Regardless, the staff is the only one of its kind to have ever been found or even mentioned.

Legendary Requires Attunement

This staff is made of magically reinforced Tanukian Wood. A glowing astrolabe is placed on one end, and a ship's wheel on another.

You can use an action to spin the astrolabe with a plane facing up, casting the plane shift spell with it (save DC 17) and transporting the targets to it. Alternatively, if you use an action to spin the astrolabe and tilt it horizontally, you can cast the gate spell and open a portal to the desired plane.
While aboard a waterborne vehicle, you can use an action to prevent it from drowning, as long as at least half of the vehicle's hull is intact.



Additionally, while holding this staff, you enjoy all of the benefits of the ranger class Natural Explorer feature, with every terrain being your favorite.



In order to use the staff, you must become familiarized with the workings of the astrolabe; this proccess takes 1d4+1 days. If you attempt to use it before you are completely familiarized with it, make a DC 15 Intelligence check. On a successful check, it works as intended. On a failure, you and each creature and object within 15 feet of you travel to a random destination. Roll a d100. On a 1–60, you travel to a random location on the plane you named. On a 61–100, you travel to a randomly determined plane of existence.



The staff has 3 charges. Each use of the staff for some sort of planar travel expends 1 charge. The staff regains one expended charge daily at dawn.

Curse. Once attuned to the staff, the attunement cannot be broken by any means, save for either the staff being destroyed or its wielder dying. Additionally, while the staff is in the possession of another creature, the attuned creature hears a constant scream, who's source is the staff.
