Elves

"There is, I think, a conceptualization of elves as a 'mysterious, distant, and oblique' race. Having lived in Oc for these 20 years now, while I cannot help be feel that this conceptualization is inaccurate, I can understand its source. Elven communities are famously isolationist: that much I will not argue, and I also acknowledge that, even when living in communities dominated by other races, they tend to keep to themselves, most major cities in the southern half of the world having an 'elven quarter'. The reasons for this, however, are not born out of a sense of supremacy, as many humans might be inclined to believe (though again, I acknowledge that there is a element that does espouse such perverse beliefs). Rather, I should like to say that relations between humans and elves are often of a short nature, from at least one party's perception. This does not mean, however, that these relationships are any less meaningful or desirable. Quite the opposite in fact: it is said often that there is no better companion than humanity. But the short nature of these relationships leads many elves to be wary of them. I invite the reader, if they are human themselves, to imagine a species that made the most wonderful friends, the most sublime acquaintances, and the most superb lovers: and then to imagine that they lived, at most, 10 years. Every such friendship is bound to end before one is ready, before one wishes it could. Losing a friend, or a lover, is indescribably painful always: losing them so frequently and abruptly is unbearable for all but the most stoic or perhaps, sociopathic. Elves are not mysterious, mystique, and fae beyond comprehension: our thoughts are much the same as any of the other races. We eat, drink, sleep, laugh, cry, and, of course, die. The only difference is the time scale."
