Periton

Periton is the capital of the Slosteria state. Once a small town of gnomes, a peaceful people that had settled around a magical spring with land blessed by Panares to be ever fertile. Over centuries, the small hamlet grew, first for the healing properties many would seek, then for the masterful wines the gnomes would make, and finally as a center of commerce when the Reidwin Channel was redirected to pass near the city.   The Town of Narrow Spring naturally grew into the capital of the Slostirian people, but upon the turn of the fourth millennium, it was decided that the name no longer fit the sprawling metropolis. The name Periton was chosen as a promise, derived from an old gnomish saying that all who refuse to innovate and adapt will be left behind.   This promise grew to become the cornerstone of Periton's philosophy. Always innovating, always adapting, paving the way for future generations. It is this persistent thinking that has allowed Periton to maintain its place as the city of innovation, even in the wake of the Catran Empire. The city's size has proven its own detriment, with its populace so large that the possibility of policing it grows slimmer with the city's current resources. The Catranian front has become such a large drain that groups of interests, called gangs by the city's propaganda, managed to take footholds in the city long before the Guild's withdrawal.   The events preceding the Guild removal and its subsequent replacement by the Sentinels left the city in a precarious position, one that many were all too happy to exploit. Many of the city's prominent industries fractured under the chaos, with only the rich managing to hold onto the properties and factories they owned.   Steam and coal became the common source of power for those in the slums and the few unlucky enough to fall out of the purview of the city's few remaining Clockwork Tinkers. The highly coveted Arcanotech, the dream of the city's nearly perfected power, fell by the wayside as the factories needed to maintain its production were abandoned. The city has slowly healed as the decades passed, but its gangs have held the city in a vice-like grip to maintain their status quo.
