Pretheyan Cuisine
The continent of Pretheya is home to a wide variety of different edible plants and animals, as well as the odd in-between that falls into neither category but is still eaten nonetheless. Though some crops, such as barley, wheat, and other staple grains are eaten in all but a scant few countries, each region in Pretheya has developed a wide variety of foods and drinks unique to their cultures. Even those foods that are available continent-wide are often served differently in each country or area, and are commonly mixed with other foods endemic to that particular region.
Generally speaking, however, the following trends are observed throughout most of Pretheya: The poor, such as peasant farmers and local artisans, are primarily restricted to eating cereals and bread, as well as whatever vegetables can be cultivated in their local area. Some may also have access to milk from various kept animals, and by extension types of cheese, as well as the meat that comes from slaughtering these animals; though this is only available intermittently. Depending on local laws, they may be allowed to hunt game such as deer or rabbits in forested locations, although this is not allowed in many countries.
Therefore, meat from game animals is largely considered the domain of the nobility, and in some cases, the wealthy, such as merchants and traders. Fruit is viewed in much the same light, owing to the fact that it can only be grown in small volumes and takes up land that would otherwise be used to grow crops, making it only available to the wealthy and powerful. Finally, confectioneries are considered the rarest and most desirable type of food, being commonly available only to the ruling class of most countries; such as members of a royal family, high-ranking nobles, or in some cases extremely wealthy merchants.
The following is a list of commonly-eaten dishes in each of the major Pretheyan countries, arranged by country, and going from west to east:
Ressengia
Ressengia is known as the golden country by its inhabitants, and this moniker is reflected in the vast fields of golden wheat that occupy much of the country. The majority of Ressengian cuisine is therefore bread-centric, and the country is known both for its wide variety of different types of bread, and the ways in which they are served.- Bread Pudding: A type of dessert made from stale bread, milk, eggs, and butter. It is one of the only 'treat foods' available to peasants, and is thus much coveted.
- Cheeses: Ressengian farmers favour cattle to a great extent when compared with other countries, and this has lead to a thriving cheese-making industry in the country. Many of the most famous and now-widespread varieties of cheese in Pretheya originate from Ressengia.
- Quiche: A type of tart consisting of a pastry crust filled with things such as meat, cheese, fish, or vegetables. Made mostly from eggs, it can be filled with as much or as little other food as the chef would like, making it both highly variable and also easy to produce on the lower end.
- Frog's Legs: Quite possibly the single most infamous dish in mainland Pretheya, Ressengians' habit of eating cooked frog legs has drawn the ire of just about every country on their borders. Regardless, it is nonetheless considered a delicacy, though one that is rarely eaten owing to the slippery nature of the frogs that must be caught.
Asutoa:
The Asutoan peninsula is well-known for its many dishes involving fish. Fish makes up a large part of the diet of most middle-class individuals in the region, and even the lower class and peasantry, albeit to a lesser extent. The most common household animal kept by Asutoans is the chicken, which is utilised for the eggs it provides, and so these are available even to the poor.- Garum: A type of fermented fish sauce made from the intestines of fish that were salted and then dried in the sun. Commonly put on other foods to give them a savoury taste.
- Anthotyros: A type of cheese made with with milk and whey, either from sheep or goats. Often used as a salad dressing.
- Sphoungata Omelette: A type of spongy egg omelette.
- Shellfish: Among the middle-class, shellfish is considered a delicacy, and often served at get-togethers hosted by the nobility.
Intersedra
Although Pretheya is home to a wide variety of dishes, some of which are considered utterly repugnant to those not from where they are produced, even the most extreme of these pale in comparison to the utterly alien cuisine of the Intersedran Thousandforms. As a culture, they are particularly fond of consuming insects, arthropods, molluscs, and other small creatures, and these can be found in the vast majority of their 'delicacies.'- Roasted Crickets: It is common for crickets to be gathered from tall grass as a pastime, and then roasted over an open fire to be later consumed as dessert.
- Frogs: One of the meals that receives the most criticism from foreigners in Ressengia are frog legs. In Intersedra, however, eating only the legs of the frog is considered wasteful, and usually, the entire body minus the head is often eaten.
- Potatoes: A type of round, yellow-brown tuber which grows underground, and when harvested, can be cooked and served with all manner of other meats or vegetables. Renowned for its nutritional value, the ease with which it can be grown and the high amount that plants produce, and the wide variety of other foods it compliments.
