Mammals
Blackpaw
These secluded felines hunt the various large game found around the
Verdant Expanse. Nocturnal by nature, it is considered unlucky to ever witness one within Beastfolk culture.
~ ~ Addendum: No one has seen a Blackpaw in a great deal of time.
Deer
There are at least 13 documented species of deer within the
Verdant Expanse. 7 of which exist solely within the
Gorgewald Forest. The most common of these being the Softpelt Elk and the rarest being the famed Ferntouch Deer.
Horses
Though treated as yet another game by most Beastfolk, both Manfolk and Faefolk have an affinity for taming these beasts for both travel and beasts of burden. It is said in the stories of the Centaurs that horses originated from deep within the
Solemn Expanse expanse in great herds before the arrival of the
First Men. Today, these majestic creatures can be found in large herds of up to 30 strong around the Western side of the
Verdant Expanse.
~ ~ Addendum:
Hyenas
Also known as Bonegnawers by the Mohnagi people or Laughing Hounds by many cultures of the Beastfolk, Hyenas are an important part of the
Verdant Expanse's ecosystem. Their ability to consume carrion, bone and all, has great value in a land where it is to hunt or to be hunted. These creatures have been noted to hunt in packs of up to 20 strong.
~ ~ Addendum: Hyenas play a more crucial role now more than ever before. Due to their natural diet of carrion, these pack hunters are well-equipped in the hunting of Unfallen. The Faroth Clan of the Centaurs have begun attempting to tame these creatures for this exact purpose.
Quarry Elephants
These hulking beasts of muscle and gray hide were brought from the Forgotten Plains by Centaurs who used them to drag their larger homes along the Eastern
Verdant Expanse. They were eventually renamed by Dwarves who used them as beasts of burden around their quarries.
~ ~ Addendum: The Quarry Elephant can now only within
Verdant where they are cared for by priests of
Oul.
Parchwind Lions
Respected by the Beastfolk of the
Verdant Expanse, lions can be found hunting in small prides or solo across the South-Western half of the
Verdant Expanse. They have been seen even traveling as far as the
Parched Expanse in search of their favorite game, Loxodoni children. Because of this, many Loxodoni have come to the conclusion of, "The only good lion is a dead lion."
~ ~ Addendum:
Gorgewald Lions
A subspecies of the common Parchwind Lion, these beasts have taken to hunting the various beasts of the
Gorgewald Forest. Hunting in prides of only two, normally a mated pair of a lion and lioness, these creatures are unnaturally stealthy and can often kill their prey before they even understand they are being hunted. Local druids within
Verdant believe this trait originates from the latent Druidic magic that flows through the forest and the prey they hunt.
~ ~ Addendum: Strangely, Gorgewald Lions CANNOT become Unfallen, unlike their Parchwind cousins.
Wild Hounds
Though wild, but-once-tame canines can be found throughout all of
Solith, the Wild Hounds of the
Verdant Expanse are considered an abomination to many Tabaxi. The origin of these belief has been hard to track down, but it has remained strong for several generations.
~ ~ Addendum: Wild Hounds have become a rarity in the
Verdant Expanse with the rise of Unfallen in the region. Though they cannot turn themselves, they seem prone to the trickery of the Undead more so than most creatures.
