Personal history
The di Valletta families are a venerable and rich family of merchants in the Apex Republic. One of the founding families of the Republic. Unfortunately Timeo di Valletta was unable to sire any children, and as such the main line of the family was about to go extinct when in 1960 he had a daughter with a Apex city prostitute. This daughter was Lucia. Then in his 50s Timeo raised Lucia as his heir, unusual but not unprecedented in Apex.

Lucia was given the best education money could buy. First she had private tutors. Then she was placed in the Republican Academy where she learned the arts, history, mathematics, and the art of war.
Employment
After her education Lucia purchased a commission as a cornet in the Apex Republican Army. Although the officer corps of the army was mostly seen as a social club for the wealthy sons of the merchant elite Lucia took her position seriously. By the age of 26 she was a lieutenant in the army in command of a cavalry squadron. She was posted to Drydale where she was instrumental in repelling a Dead Sea Collective raid on the city, when she and her cavalry squadron got behind the raiders and begun to burn their ships.
This got her promoted to Captain of the Cavalry, the highest non-political commission in the army. Her father died in 1992, and she became head of house Valletta. She failed to be elected to her father's seat on the Council of Ten. Instead she was made Lord-Captain of the Army as a consolation price, and in honour of her achievements as Captain of the Cavalry. In 1998 the AEF was being put together and she requested command, and received it. For Lucia it was a chance to enhance her family's glory in battle. For the council of Ten it was relief to be rid of a troublesome and wealthy woman.
