Defence Against Magic is a controversial subject that teaches students how to defend against magic. Some opposers believe it is teaching students to learn how to fight and often make complaints to the Magi Council or Alice Monaghan. The Magi Council has no power to disrupt the curriculum of Taru International Academy, and Alice makes a point of burning the council's complaints at the beginning of each year during teacher meetings.

Defence Against Magic is a compulsory subject that students must study throughout their school life in the academy. It teaches not only techniques to defend against magic cast against someone, but also ways to dispel laws, remove poison and to practice mindfulness, to discourage students from becoming a danger to themselves.

"Students your age shouldn't be using calling magic." Lo Chen said, as he tightened the rope on the junk boat. "But those who do... Should be careful.
