Non-clockwork Technology of Himinil

When compared to our world, Himinil's equivalent time period varies depending on the technology. Usually, this time period is anywhere from the 1500's to 1800's. The reason for this is that most of the world has been unable to communicate up until the last few centuries. Since then, the church of Veritism has spread throughout the world and forced much of the worlds knowledge to compile.

Medical Sciences

The state of medicine in Himinil varies on location. The Major and Minor powers have a mutual understanding of medicine. This is equivalent to 17th-century medicine. The common theory of disease was that it was spread by miasma. Doctors commonly wore large plague masks stuffed with herbs and incense in order to ward off disease. Thick incense is burned around these doctors as well, making it common to smell a plague doctor before you can see one. Most insignificant peoples have a different view on medicine. The ideas of medicine vary from island to island, but it is usually based on superstition.   Surgery in Himinil is deadly, messy, and painful. There is little in the way of anesthesia, tools of the trade are rarely cleaned, and surgeons did not wash their hands between surgeries, and most surgeons had only a small amount of schooling. Medicine was often worse than the diseases they killed. Poisonous substances, such as mercury, was often used and there was little to no understanding of the ways of chemistry. The most reliable method of curing a disease is to visit an alchemist. Alchemy has been made illegal, so only the most desperate visit them. The costs of such aid is often quite expensive, but reliable.

Education

Few people can afford private education in Himinil. There are a few places throughout the world that offer public education, but these schools are run by the church of Veritism. Because of the church's willingness to create and manage public education, they control public general knowledge. It is by no means a requirement to attend these schools and most children are pulled from the system once they can work. Public education is most common in Mokso. Though, many public schools are built throughout the world. These schools are strict and teach the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. They are also taught some simple history. Most of the public do not go to these schools, so they cannot read or write.   Private education is much more expensive. Only the rich or the resourceful can get a private education. These universities each have specialties. Schools of medicine, philosophy, archeology, and many other studies are funded by the wealthy. Private education is on the rise in recent years. More and more funding for these universities is being found.

Weaponry

Flintlock pistols and rifles are the best weapons available. They are powerful, deadly, and can punch through all but the strongest armors. However, every military in Himinil is under the agreement that firearms are extremely dangerous for the public. Because of this, they are heavily regulated. While it is possible to get your hands on a stolen firearm, reliable ammunition and black powder are hard to come by. You will also be hunted by specialized troops who seek to remove firearms from the public.   Because of the regulation of firearms and their inaccuracies, crossbows and longbows are common weapons for mercenaries, hunters, and adventurers. Crossbows are often just, or more, sophisticated as firearms. Sometimes, Crossbows are enhanced with clockwork technology. Allowing them to be drawn faster or act as self-repelling grappling hooks.   On an airship, cannons are the most deadly weapon of them all. A single cannon shot can sink an airship. Luckily, cannons are expensive and regulated by the military. So most ship use ballistae. Catapults would be a nice alternative, but the balloons do not allow for such a weapon.

Other Technologies

Metallurgy

Metallurgy is perhaps the most advanced science in himinil. Steel is common and more advanced metals are crafted. Each metallurgist has their own formulas and techniques. Light alloys of steel, super metals, and magical metals are just some examples of metals. Airships have been crafted of light metal made by master metallurgists. Master blacksmiths mix warp pearl dust into their foundries to enhance the metal. This is, of course, illegal. But there are many mythical metals made by hidden people. Adamantine, Mythril, glowing metals, metals that are continuously red hot, and many other mythical metals are traded in black markets.

Astromony

The study of stars is very important for traveling among the skies. Any sailor worth its teeth has a basic understanding of astronomy. specialized sextants are used to determine location based on the stars. Thus it is important to know the location of the stars. Without this sextant, one can still use the stars to get an idea of where they are in the world.

Glass and optics

Clear glass is not as common in Himinil as it is on earth. As a result, glass jars are an expensive luxury and any glass objects are muddy looking. However, those who have access to the silicon sand required to make clean and clear sand have experimented with the glass to create magnifying glass, spectacles, and telescopes. Scopes are also an expensive but sought after technology.

Mathmatics and Computing

Clockwork requires a fine understanding of mathematics. As a result, most engineers experiment with mathematics and various techniques of computing. Rudimentary computers have been created. These machines are experimental and are simply number calculation machines. Automatons use even more complex machines which calculate many variables. All of these calculations use many small and complicated gears.
