The Sky Islands of Himinil

Above the reflected sky, floating as though lighter than air, are thousands upon thousands of floating landmasses known as Islands. The smallest of these islands are two miles long, and the largest would be comparable to a continent. These islands support life and civilization. Animals and Humans call these places home. They drift slowly through the sky. So slowly, that an entire lifetime can go by and an island only moves a fingers length. More disturbingly, these islands fall at the same rate. Not so fast to be noticeable, but a grim reminder that this worlds time is finite.   Below these islands is an unforgiving sea of a metallic nature called the reflective sky. Should an island touch its surface, something that has only happened once, then the entire island is dragged into its depths never to resurface. The only thing able to escape this sea is a cold mist which rises and forms the clouds.   Why the islands float is unknown to any mortal memory. At the dawn of this world, as the world was being dragged into the underworld, a Nerre gave to a young woman the first warp pearl. She became the first witch. This witch was incredibly powerful. Her gift was the ability to grant one wish. The contents of the wish granted were lost to time, but the results rose the islands and saved humanity. The residual magic of this wish created millions of warp pearls within many islands but it is fading. The islands are sinking.

Geography

The geography of the islands varies wildly from isle to isle. In general, however, an island is generally a tenth as tall as it is long. The maximum limit on this seems to be approximately a mile. This means that a 10-mile diameter island generally has 75 cubic miles of earth and ore. Caverns and cave systems are not unheard of.   Some islands are large enough to house rivers, lakes, and even mountains. These near continent-sized islands are few and far between, but grand civilizations arise from them.

Fauna & Flora

Every island contains its own ecosystem. Deer, wolves, pigs, cows, and many other common animals are found on most islands. Each with their own distinct differences. One animal every island has in common, however, is birds. Avians thrive here, flying from island to island. Over the years, most birds have been slowly evolving to be larger and larger. Now, the common pigeon is the size of a turkey. Small birds, such as hummingbirds and woodpeckers, stayed small. Other flying creatures are common as well. Winged lizards and snakes, large dog-sized bats, and various larger insects.   Plants vary much more than animals on different islands. Some plants are different enough to give certain islands a particular look or feel. Other plants are commonly spread on many sky islands. These spread through spores or floating seeds. Mushroom growths on the sides of islands are common and usually signal a direction to the nearest island.   Islands with large amounts of Warp Pearls sometimes have strange animals. A wolf might be born with the intelligence of a man, or a fish could glow. Plants are not immune to this effect of course. Trees that bleed blood and grass as sturdy as steel have been found on some islands. These changes are rare enough to be legends and myths throughout the islands, but they are real enough.

Natural Resources

These islands are deep enough to contain minerals and ore. Thus mining is a common practice on these islands. Many islands also support woods, forests, and even jungles to harvest wood. No two islands have the exact same resources as others.
