Buns

Listen, bread is essential and if you throw in a bunch of herbs or you have a little bit of butter or cheese with it, nothing can really surpass the taste or smell of a nice loaf, when it is freshly taken out of the oven and laid down in front of you.   But there is one more meal that is seen as superior, as a gift from heaven so to speak (or nature, depending on your belief) - and that is juicy, soft, delicious buns.   An absolute staple, quark buns, fruit buns, meat buns or mystery buns are the top favourite meal among travelers. Throw a bunch of these bad boys in a piece of cloth, tie it to your walking stick and you can march worry free all the way down to hell (or a different piece of nature, depending on your belief).   They are simple to make. You take a little bit of flour and mix it with some water to make a dough. You can add in an egg too if you are feeling fancy. Let it rest for a bit and then take a little piece of the dough that would fit comfortably in your palm. Kneed it nicely and create a little flat surface on your hand, so you can then put in your fillings - usually something simple like a piece of apricot, one or two strawberries, a spoon of a quark or poppy seed mixture, largely depending on what is in season or what you have around. Fold the dough gently over your filling of choice (or necessity) and roll it a bit around in both of your hands to make a nice little round(ish) ball. Place those balls onto a baking tray, stack them tightly next to each other until all of the surface of the tray is covered with nice little dough hills. It will all bake as one big mass of deliciousness and the individual buns will be very easy to tear off from one another after it is all done.
