In the central area of Grayburn, a lot of the soil is quite soft. This causes heavy buildings to sink slowly. To counteract this, long poles are driven into the soil to solidify the foundation first. While this technique works for settlements, it is too costly for railroads, which is why steamships remain the main travel method between cities.
In towns and cities, frequent haphazardly expansions to buildings resulted in entire mazes of alleyways inbetween the major roads. When someone wants to combine two buildings, blocking the alleyway is frowned upon, so often a skybridge is built instead. A typical example would be a pub growing into a large tavern, ending up with its kitchen and storage in a secondary building.
