Wool
The humble sheep, it seems,
Gives to me the nicest dreams.
A blanket that is made of wool
Is better than a tummy full
For weighing my eyelids and guiding me to rest.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Wool is a soft fabric spun from fibers of (predominantly) sheep hair. It is pliant to the touch, unless it is drawn taut or packed with curious intensity. By nature, it is the colour of the sheep from which the hair is hewed. Pale wool is more prized than dark wool due to the ease with which it is died. Wool has been widely used on the continent of Tellanor since time immemorial, and its fashionable status cycles with the seasons.
Physical & Chemical Properties
All wools have a certain level of elasticity; the ability to stretch and reform; and crimp; the ability to fold back on itself. The greater the elasticity and crimp a wool has, the softer it feels.
Origin & Source
Wool is a general name, not a specific one, and while various breeds of sheep are the most common source of wool, alpacas, llamas, yaks and any creature with thick coats of fur can produce what most call 'wool'. Wool is spun into thread, which the unenlightened masses call wool, as opposed to 'fleece', which is more appropriately used to refer to a wool-producing creature's coat than the product of it. The fools.
Life & Expiration
Wool, if stored well and cared for, lasts indefinitely. After approximately ten years, however, the elasticity of wool does tend to degrade. Wool that is exposed to harsher weather deteriorates more rapidly. As the old saying goes, care for your wool and it will care for you.
