Heather Hullu performs the Feather Ritual, praying the Ragged Lady will bring her a beautiful elf baby, and so begins the life and career of Narri Hullu. A year later, she will perform the ceremony again to gain her daughter, Zivah.   For herself, Heather is a Launderess on Bailymena's famed Washwoman Lane. She works hard and kills herself with toil to keep her darlings from the bleach and boil, and Narri does not disappoint.

From the start, he is a clever boy with a knack for strategy. He parleys this into a clark's apprenticeship with Starkweather & Fair, and from there he obtains a second-to-none legal education, under the tutelage of its finest minds. He works hard and spends his money wisely, investing here and there to move his mother out of the muck of the laundry by inches, pay for his sister's increasingly-expensive education, and support himself in the manner to which he has become accustomed.

Finally, Narri is offered the Pact, by the Senior Partners at the Firm.
