Kitespires are the buildings in the Crimson Chain Isles that are used for Kite Cypher, the method of communicating messages over long distances using large kites and arrangements of kites. These towers are seen as a form of protection and security. The first blueprints of kitespires were developed by Jihlan Morvovo, but the designs for these towers have been refined throughout the years ever since the first ones were built.
Tower of Kites
Kitespires are typically tall, slender towers that are either circular or octagonal in shape. The architectural style differs from region to region, but in all cases, balconies and observation decks punctuate the towers at various heights. These balconies and decks jut outward from the tower and feature beams, hooks and rings to which the kites can be attached when a message needs to be sent. At every level, the tower has rooms where kites are neatly stored in protective compartments to preserve the fabric and the
levitation enchantments. Each kite has its own individual spool or rack, and the collection is neatly organized based on purpose and code. The upper most levels of the tower feature living quarters that historically were used by
Kite Keepers, but are now inhabited by a small number of guards or soldiers. These levels are also used to receive messages with the use of observational equipment such as lenses and telescopes which are permanently pointed at other kitespires.
Outposts
Kitespires are built in remote places, and can sometimes serve as a small millitary outpost. Others kitespires have attracted small communities to them, which in some cases has lead to homesteads and villages to be built up around them. There are also a number of kitespires that are constructed on tiny, remote islands scattered across the seas. These kitespires serve to bridge gaps between communities and are instrumental in safeguarding the islands against potential threats by creating a tight network of communication. Guard duty at one of these outposts is typically rotated more often than within other kitespires, as the life here is quite sober and rather unpleasant.
