Whiteleaf Soup
Whiteleaf Soup, also known as "pale soup" or "pioneer's stew," is a common dish found throughout Azuno but is most popular on mainland Azuno in the regions of Chenir, Ankoya and M'Oviri. According to legend, this beloved dish was invented river fisherman who found himself swept out to sea during a fierce storm. Shipwrecked on the remote Stormbreak Achipelago with no food and limited resources, he resorted to cooking the whiteleaf bamboo that his raft was made of to sustain himself. It is unknown how the fisherman returned to home, but the dish has gained widespread popularity over the years as a simple but nourishing meal.
Refreshing Bamboo Soup
Whiteleaf Soup is commonly enjoyed chilled, as the liquids within the bamboo tend to cool rapidly. The soup's cold temperature makes it a perfect choice for hot and humid days that are common in Azuno. The recipe has evolved far beyond the legend of the fisherman stewing the wood of his raft. Now, it incorporates the water and fibers from the bamboo shoots as well as the young and tender leaves of the plant. It is combined with a carefully selected medley of spices and grated coconut. This spiceblend is slightly different from region to region, but always incorporates ginger and lemongrass and either pepper or chili. The bamboo leaves are usually stewed on a low fire for at least two hours with all ingredients to infuse the soup with their flavor but are afterwards removed. The stewing is done in some regions through a Volcanic Slow Boil, as this method of cooking allows for a constant heat to be applied to the soup. The easy transportability and long shelf life of the soup itself, as well as its main ingredients make it a favored choice for travelers on long journeys, and the abundance of whiteleaf bamboo makes it a simple dish to cook for the Azun people as well as the adventurers who explore the jungles of the islands of Azuno.
