Properties
Material Characteristics
Once harvested Geisan silk is the color of moonlight, a harsh irridescent silver that tends to take on the qualities of colors surrounding it. Before being processed it's bundled in large quantities, often as long as a man is tall.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Unprocessed Geisan Silk is sticky to the touch, incredibly durable, and shows remarkable elasticity. Geisan silk is known for being flame resistant and hardy, the fabric remaining in tact for years without much wear-and-tear. However, there are drawbacks to this silk. If left in water, exposed to multiple rain showers, or simply not dried soon enough, Geisan Silk will start to deteriorate.
Geology & Geography
Silk of this variety can only be found and produced in Geisa, specifically the temperate southwestern region.
Origin & Source
The silkworms of Geisa are found on native berry trees, the likes of which are only seen upon Agyos. Unlike the latter, the berry trees of Geisa blossom and produce year-round, giving way to the industrious Silk Farms the world knows today.
Life & Expiration
Geisan Silk is hardy and longlasting - as long it's properly taken care of. The oldest known cloth-of-silk resides in the Consortium of Knowledge, where it has been on display for nearly two hundred and eighty years.
History & Usage
Discovery
Silk was first discovered upon Agyos, nearly five thousand years prior, by an unnamed man hailing from the Arm of Islte; which is a temperate forest condusive for silkworm moths. Legend reigns from here, however, and it goes as such...
Tired of having to trek through miles of web-silk to get to the back of his property, he slowly culled the smaller berry trees that the silkworms adorned, and made a grove just for them. It was about a year or two later that he happened back upon that grove, and found the web-silk so dense that it reminded him of the thread his wife used so often.
The legend goes on to state that he wound up a mound of web-silk on a thick, sturdy branch and brought it home for his wife to weave. They became wealthy, once they learned its secret, and coveted it for many years. They sold only to the wealthy, merchants and families of noble blood, until in his final year of life, it was said the Emperor summoned the old man and his wife to the palace, in which he requested silk to be harvested and made for him and the empire as a whole.
Everyday use
Silk and chiffon have become a staple of wealthy fashion and is used in many different forms: silk-wraps, dresses, under-garments and robes, scarves, head wraps, cerimonal garb and sashes, and of course royal garments.
Cultural Significance and Usage
In Geisa, the amount of silk one wears, and in particular, what color one wears, usually denotes status and wealth.
