The Rebellion of Maenkes
Where Dreams of Freedom Never Die
Maenkes: A Small cluster of Islands in the far Western Shores of the Mortal Lands. Settled by only a few colonies of settlers, miners and frontiersmen after the precious mineral Crystalized Source.
Cailar: The Dominant military and econoimcal power of the Mortal Lands. Officially the governing body of Maenkes, having sent the original expedition group to the little cluster of Islands.
Two forces on the polar opposite ends of the power spectrum, destined to clash over a matter only equal to death; taxes.
The Conflict
Prelude
Maenkes was in dire straights. Those few native colonies that had existed prior to the arrival of the Cailar Frontier Corps had been all but extinguished. Those frontier towns that had taken their place where well divorced from the homeland, with vastly different views. Added to this was the sheer fact, that while techinically Maenkes was a Cailar colony, Maenkes was not represented in Cailar government or affairs aside from a token representative who got to bear the news of the latest tax raises and tarriffs back to the distant chain of islands. After years of oppression and high taxes, the people of Maenkes had enough.
Battlefield
Maenkes had in their favor sheer distance from the rest of Cailar; the military either had to sail around the entirety of the Mortal Lands, or cross several other kingdoms and countries in order to reach Maenkes. Cailar had in their favor suprerior technological prowess, better trained military, and more access to resources.
The battle quickly became a war of alliances and words rather than direct combat; while Cailar could easily stomp out the colonies on Maenkes, re-colonizing and training new crews to mine the precious Crystal source would take time and manpower. Mira, in a daring move, sided with Maenkes, appalled by Cailar's push to find more uses for Crystalized Source other than as a power source. Dalreme sided with Maenkes as well, though this was due to Cailar being their technological rival rather than any moral standpoint.
While this effectively cut Cailar off from a Costal expedition save for the northern and southernmost tips of the country, Most other Countries took Cailar's side in the argument due to the country's sheer size and political influence.
The Engagement
Sadly, the Rebellion of Maenkes ended swiftly, and bloodily. A single military excursion from the northernmost tip of Cailar sailed around the Mortal Lands, reaching Maenkes several months after the initial rebellion. Believing themselves to have 'won', Maenkes was woefully unprepared for the invasion. The Rebellion was put down, and Maenkes was under Cailar control once more.
Aftermath
Yet the flame of Rebellion did not extinguish-it lingered, lurking like embers in a fire until the Night of Falling Crowns many years later. Sensing their opportunity, Maenkes struck out again and this time, sucessfully threw off the yoke of their opressors.
